SECOND SELF BEER CO TO HOST FAMILY-FRIENDLY EVENT BENEFITING ATLANTA FIREFIGHTERS

Posted by Liz and John Attaway, 9/20/22

Locals are invited to shop, eat and sip brews to benefit Atlanta Professional Fire Fighters

Saturday, 9/24 at Noon to 5 pm

On Saturday, September 24, West Midtown’s favorite brewery will host a festival to raise funds for Atlanta Professional Fire Fighters (APFF), a non-profit that fights for the city’s firefighters to have proper safety resources, funds for medical care and more.

The festivities, happening from noon to 5 p.m., will feature a pop-up market, food trucks, various Second Self beers, games and more.

Atlantans can shop from local vendors such as Sweet As a Peach Jams & Pickles, Just Add Honey Tea Company and Amore Organics — and for custom t-shirts by APFF — from noon to 2 p.m. Throughout the event, attendees can mingle with local firefighters and participate in games while savoring delicious eats and sips for a good cause.

Second Self is releasing a limited-edition version of their fan-favorite “La Fría” with an added fruit element and renaming it La Fuega for the day (meaning “fire” in Spanish) – a nod to their support of APFF. All proceeds from La Fuega will benefit local firefighters.

A portion of event proceeds will go towards APFF’s health and wellness fund. The charity covers everything from mental health support for PTSD symptoms, recovery for job-related injuries, funeral costs as well as much-needed financial support for families of fallen firefighters.

Fundraisers APFF has previously hosted include their annual St. Patrick’s Day Picnic in conjunction with the city’s St. Patrick’s Day parade, and a donation dine-in where they partnered with local businesses like Chick Fil-A, Hudson Grille and others on International Firefighters’ Day.

For more information about the festival, please visit APFF’s Facebook event page.

(Simply Us Doing Our Share)
Saturday, October 15 at Legacy ParkA Decatur Backyard Beer Experience
70+ Craft Beers, Quality Eats, Rockin’ Live Tunes100% of ticket proceeds will be donated to Legacy Park
The well-known, twenty-plus year-old Decatur Beer Festival has been on hiatus for two years due to the pandemic. But wait no more! This fall, the beer-centric community event will reemerge on Saturday, October 15, as SUDs–Simply Us Doing Our Share–a new, Decatur-based nonprofit organized by the same gentlemen who crafted Decatur Beer Festival–Dave Blanchard, Tom Moore, and Mike Gallagher, known for Brick Store PubLEON’s Full ServiceGood Word BrewingGiving Kitchen, and now SUDS. All proceeds raised from SUDS 2022 will be donated to those organizations located at Legacy Park, conveniently located on the southeastern side of Decatur, just 1.3 miles from downtown–the new home of SUDs 2022.

Mike Gallagher shared, “We look at 2022 as a reintroduction year for various reasons. First, our family and I used our downtime over the last two years to do some deep critical thinking about how we could bring back our beloved beer festival in a stronger and “better” way than before. Think of SUDS as a reimagined  beer festival with a more strategic focus on the approach–a new way to give back to those who are the backbone of our Decatur home. We have rebranded and found a new spot to call home at Legacy Park so, we are ready to crush the craft beer list and raise the bar regarding nonprofit awareness!”

SUDS tickets were offered pre-sale to long-time guests of the Decatur Beer Festival, and today, they are on sale to the general public.Tickets are $60 until midnight on September 14. After that, ticket prices will increase to $65 on September 15. This 21+ and up event will include a SUDS beer glass, unlimited sips from over 70 craft beer makers, and tunes from Blacktop Rockets, Penelope Road and Bogey, and The Viceroy, who will turn it up on an Amplify sound stage. Tons of sipping and rocking while guests visit various booths to learn about the surrounding organizations that focus on everything from growing organic vegetables, to raising kids with art and music, and how the community can support the houseless population.

Fine food by Terry Koval of The Deer and The Dove, Shay Lavi of Nur Kitchen, and Third Space will be available throughout the day.
Over 1.6 million dollars from the Decatur Beer Festival’s twenty-year run was previously donated to various nonprofits. SUDS will highlight donating to the more than two-dozen organizations and nonprofits at Legacy Park in 2022.

About SUDs–Simply Us Doing Our Share
A Decatur backyard beer experienceSUDS was created by three crafty gentlemen, Dave Blanchard, Tom Moore, and Mike Gallagher, from Brick Store Pub, who had downtime on their hands during the 2020 pandemic, so they used their time wisely to reinvigorate the uber-successful Decatur Beer Festival, and SUDs was born. 100% of SUDS 2022 ticket proceeds will be donated to help support a variety of the nonprofits located at Legacy Park–the 2022 SUDs location. If proceeds allow, SUDS can additionally support other local nonprofits via an RFP for grants following the festival’s first year. The SUDS team is a locally supportive, community-involved, entire service festival. Join us on Saturday, October 15, 2022 Noon to 4:00 pm.

MOVIEBUSTER SAVE THE HALLOWEEN VIDEO STORE

Posted by Liz and John Attaway, 9/16/22

Use promo code “ADVENTURE20” for 20% off your purchase.

Underground Atlanta, September 16 – November 6

After a wildly successful run in Marietta, Into the Film is psyched to bring back “Save the Video Store,” an immersive theatrical experience, but this time reimagined as a Y2K-era Horror Experience, just in time for Halloween season.

Created and directed by Erin Stegeman (Fun Size Horror, Once Upon A Time: The Rock Opera, Shame of Thrones), “Save the Video Store 2.0” is described as a combination of campy nostalgia, interactive theater, and escape room. The 90-minute experience thrusts guests into iconic late 90s-00s scary movies as they engage with the cast of employees, compete for prizes and more! The pop up Moviebuster (that’s the name of the show’s titular video store) also includes a themed bar for guests to enjoy nostalgic drinks before and after the show.

“We’re the haunt experience for those that love comedy and campy fun with their scares, which was archetypal to movies of that era”, says Stegeman

The team at Into the Film is no stranger to the interactive theater experience. In 2017, they produced “A Night at the Opera,” an experience which allowed guests to enter the world of 1880s Paris to become part of one of the most famous stories of all time: The Phantom of the Opera.

“We are all massive cinephiles who have been hungry for a new way to experience film, bringing it to life with immersive theater,” said Into the Film co-founders Erik Mihlsten and Alena Geffner-Mihlsten. “With the massive growth of the film industry in Atlanta over the last several years, we believe it’s the perfect location to thrust an audience right into the action at the intersection of film and theater.”

“Save the Video Store” is set to run from Sept 16 – Nov 6, 2022, at the Underground Atlanta.

DRAGONCON 2022: RIBBONS & T-REXES

Posted by Liz and John Attaway, 9/14/22

Every year, DragonCon takes on a life of its own. This year was no different with fun new trends like The Loyal Order of the Ribbon, cults going strong, or massive groups like the T-Rex Horde. That’s all on top of the fantastic cosplay, Mardi Gras atmosphere, star-studded panels, meet and greets with celebrities, and nighttime parties and live performances!

The Loyal Order of the Ribbon

A fascination for some, a necessity for others, the Loyal order of the Ribbon has taken the badge ribbon trend to a whole new level. Found in the DragonCon app, meet ups to swap ribbons happens daily, where you can find your new favorite. We found that there are a few reasons that people create ribbons like the love of a show, fandom, or favorite quotes, books, or simply to share information on a brand! At DragonCon you can grow your badge ribbons as long as you want or just wear your favorites. We saw several people roll theirs up because they would hit the floor or stand on the second floor of the Hilton and drop the ribbons into the lobby. Yes, they’re that long! Our favorite ribbons were the classic Marriott Carpet and 24601 from Les Mis. We even made a ribbon for our Instagram page so people could watch our Danny goes to DragonCon stories. What ribbon would you want if you could have anything?

T-Rex Horde

Speaking of Danny, another trend in the DragonCon universe is the blow-up T-Rex horde. There has to be at least 100 or more people that gather almost every night to go through each hotel as a T-Rex Horde! T-Rexes from the Marriott Carpetasaur, Darth Vader, Velociraptors, Unicorns all joined in on the fun. The best part is John and I both have blow-up outfits and this year we featured on our stories, Danny, a dinosaur that goes to DragonCon for the first time. He went to a panel (and the actors waved at him), the parade, met his Idol, the Marriott Carpetasaur, got a bucket of rum, went to Trader Vics, got his first Monks Mead, and so many other firsts. Then, on Sunday, we did the T-Rex running and it was a blast. You get to see the joy on people’s faces to watch a parade of T-Rexes and they take photos and videos of the entire thing!

The Cult of Jon

Don’t be fooled, the Cult of Jon is going strong since 2019. Started out as a humble FedEx cut-out, DragonCon fans adorned him with stickers and put candles around him to transform him into a cult-like leader everyone could enjoy. It is all in good fun, as this year, the Scofflaw Beer folks stationed their own cut outs around and people too out google eyes on them and stickers, some even blasted them as “false prophets.” It’s pretty entertaining to watch. What will be the next cult?

Eddie Munson

The “new Deadpool” was Eddie Munson, the loveable Hellfire Club leader from Stranger Things latest season. There were men, women and mash-ups of Eddie all over the place and they even had a huge photo meet up. There HAD to be 30,000 of them! Our favorite Eddies were the two that had a guitar and amps and we watched them have a “Master of Puppets” guitar off. It was funny. What will be the next most popular costume?

Panels

We went to two panels, Gotham with Ben McKenzie and then a Walking Dead Panel with several actors including Chandler Riggs. The highlights from Gotham included learning that Ben (Gordon) didn’t even have to audition as he was approached by the show runner, how him and Monica Baccarin (Leslie) met on the set and eventually got married, and how he never wanted to wear the Gordon mustache! Then, the highlights from The Walking Dead panel were learning how much Riggs (Carl) loved growing up on the set of the Walking Dead and how it shaped him, listening to fun blooper moments, hearing which death was the hardest, and how Katelyn (Enid) loves potatoes. You always find something fun in these panels. I will never forget the Smallville one last year where they sang their theme song.

Cosplay You have to check out our photo journal of all our favorite cosplays, bots, costumes, and moments!
