The Candler Hotel: A Vault of History

Posted by Liz and John Attaway, 9/30/22

Unlock a vault of history treasures at The Candler Hotel in Downtown, Atlanta! Beyond the turn-of the century pristine marble, original breathtaking chandeliers, all mixed with modern touches and a completely renovated guest space, The Candler Hotel is the place that any history or Coca-Cola buff needs to stay. Hint: there’s a secret Vault, and you can take a tour!

Does anyone know where the first Coca-Cola headquarters was located in Atlanta? Where the secret Coca-Cola recipe was stored in its early years? If you said, The Candler, you’re correct! Named after one of the most important people in Coke history, Asa Candler built The Candler as the headquarters of Coca-Cola in the early 1900s. Now, guests of the hotel and By George get a free tour (weekends only) of the history of the building AND the vault where the original Coke recipe was kept!! Monday to Thursday they’re going to hold intimate dinners in the vault with the By George chef! Sign us up!

We love the rich history, modern vibes, and white glove service the Chandler offers. When they transformed the Candler Building into the Candler Hotel, they had to literally build each room from scratch and now they are modern and spacious with a good mix of metals and soft touches. Pink marble in the bathroom and throw-back photos on the walls, all with a view of the Atlanta skyline. It’s the IT place to stay.

On top of the lush accommodation, they have QR codes around the property that give takes you to the architecture and history website of the Candler. You can learn so much about it there. Also, don’t miss one of the first American Bank deposit boxes displayed in the lobby or the building directory from the last tenants before the building morphed into a hotel.

We could go on for days.

The most highly-acclaimed and terrifying haunted house in the nation, NETHERWORLD Haunted House, is set to make its return during its Opening Weekend this Friday, Sept. 23 and Saturday, Sept. 24 with two nightmarish haunts and plenty of thrilling new additions to its Halloween themed Midway!

This year, thrill seekers will get the scare of their lives at NETHERWORLD’S PARASITIC and THE UNDYING HORROR haunted houses. In THE UNDYING HORROR, visitors will try to escape a massive world-destroying ancient monster and its wraithlike army, and in PARASITIC, guests will confront the mind-controlling spores and carnivorous chlorophyll creatures unleashed by a nefarious plant-based life form filled with the twisted power from last year’s Planet X!

“Both of our haunts this year blend elements of our previous stories into brand new tales, even more intense than the ones that came before them,” said NETHERWORLD Co-Founder Ben Armstrong. “The UNDYING HORROR is a continuation of the COSMIC HORROR saga that began when we first moved to Stone Mountain, and PARASITIC is a story of science gone wrong that features weird plant-based mutations of one of our classic characters, The Harvestman.”

Between the houses, NETHERWORLD has a new option for those who want to join in on the fright called “You Scare.” In this experience, true horror-lovers will get their shot at playing the villain by using a paintball gun, dubbed the “scare blaster,” to shoot paint at an unbreakable see-through barrier, startling those in line for the second haunted house.

In addition to both blood-curling haunts and “You Scare,” NETHERWORLD is launching a laser-based horror survival add-on experience for the first time ever. Titled “Alien Terror,” the experience will put NETHERWORLD adventurers face-to-face with an extraterrestrial monster that has one goal: to turn every player in the game into one of its evil minions with its laser weapon. The official opening date for this experience is to be announced, so stay tuned for more information!

The adventure continues with NETHERWORLD’s updated Midway experience, a Halloween-drenched area that attendees can explore featuring a myriad of creepy photo ops (including a huge new skeletal dragon), roaming creatures aplenty, and a variety of food options including hot dogs, nachos, demented donuts, and gourmet popcorn in flavors like classic butter and hot and spicy. This year NETHERWORLD is also introducing Dr. Octane’s Bizarre Beverages, where the sinister mad scientist Dr. Octane will serve up non-alcoholic bubbling concoctions featuring swirls of colors perfect for a share-worthy video!

“We are incredibly excited for veteran NETHERWORLD fans and first-timers alike to experience everything that we have to offer this year,” said NETHERWORLD Co-Founder Billy Messina. “Our goal has always been to provide visitors with a seasonal Halloween experience that’s beyond compare…and with all the upgrades we’ve made this year, both inside and outside the haunts, we hope that folks will feel that we’ve done exactly that.”

NETHERWORLD Haunted House will be open beginning the weekend of Sept. 23–24, then most dates through Halloween and weekends in November until the closing weekend on Nov. 11–12. Tickets are on sale now. For more details on the haunts and new additions and to buy tickets, visit www.fearworld.com

Continue for more information about this year’s two new haunts…

THE UNDYING HORROR: Concealed in the chaos of a deadly storm, an ancient monstrosity launches massive tentacles to the surface world corrupting everything they touch! Can a battle-worn group of survivors fight their way past the legions of Wraiths and Netherspawn to defeat this nightmarish creature or will the world fall to The Undying Horror?

Featuring: Warlike Wraiths, Rampaging Netherspawn, The Weird Lab of Dr. Squid, The Old One Arises, The Emergence of the Undying, The Monster-Infested Netherscape, The Undead Army of the Zombie Queen, The Swirling Mists of Zin, The Massive Tentacles of Ubbo Sathla, The Bone Beasts of Carcosa and Face to Face with the Undying Horror! A massive feast of nightmares invades a shattered planet as NETHERWORLD charges headlong into its 26th Season of Screams swarming with supercharged apocalyptic action!

PARASITIC: A bizarre Parasitic plant-based life form filled with the twisted power of Planet X and grown on a discarded husk of The Harvestman springs to unnatural life in the top-secret facility known as the BOX! After infecting the staff with mind-controlling spores and unleashing an army of carnivorous plant and fungus-based creatures, it seeks vengeance on its foolish captors before attempting to escape into the world of men!

Featuring: The Fungal Zombies, The Pit of The Green Slime, The Worm that Gnaws, The Monster that Challenged the World, Swamp Beast Horror, Deadly Nightshade, The Chlorophyll Killers, The Bloody Massacre of the Mutilated, Exo Biological Evil Unleashed, The Primeval Pawns of the Parasite, The Nightmare Run and Get to the Chopper! Will you and your team escape the terror that grows within you, or will you succumb to the unimaginable agony as you become one of the Parasitic legions?

SECOND SELF BEER CO TO HOST FAMILY-FRIENDLY EVENT BENEFITING ATLANTA FIREFIGHTERS

Posted by Liz and John Attaway, 9/20/22

Locals are invited to shop, eat and sip brews to benefit Atlanta Professional Fire Fighters

Saturday, 9/24 at Noon to 5 pm

On Saturday, September 24, West Midtown’s favorite brewery will host a festival to raise funds for Atlanta Professional Fire Fighters (APFF), a non-profit that fights for the city’s firefighters to have proper safety resources, funds for medical care and more.

The festivities, happening from noon to 5 p.m., will feature a pop-up market, food trucks, various Second Self beers, games and more.

Atlantans can shop from local vendors such as Sweet As a Peach Jams & Pickles, Just Add Honey Tea Company and Amore Organics — and for custom t-shirts by APFF — from noon to 2 p.m. Throughout the event, attendees can mingle with local firefighters and participate in games while savoring delicious eats and sips for a good cause.

Second Self is releasing a limited-edition version of their fan-favorite “La Fría” with an added fruit element and renaming it La Fuega for the day (meaning “fire” in Spanish) – a nod to their support of APFF. All proceeds from La Fuega will benefit local firefighters.

A portion of event proceeds will go towards APFF’s health and wellness fund. The charity covers everything from mental health support for PTSD symptoms, recovery for job-related injuries, funeral costs as well as much-needed financial support for families of fallen firefighters.

Fundraisers APFF has previously hosted include their annual St. Patrick’s Day Picnic in conjunction with the city’s St. Patrick’s Day parade, and a donation dine-in where they partnered with local businesses like Chick Fil-A, Hudson Grille and others on International Firefighters’ Day.

For more information about the festival, please visit APFF’s Facebook event page.
