PONCE CITY MARKET ANNOUNCES ‘PUNK FOODIE @ PONCE’ TO OPEN FALL 2023 IN THE CENTRAL FOOD HALL

Posted by Liz and John Attaway, 8/24/23

Culinary Pop-Up Accelerator will Host Chef Residences, a Monthly Rotation of Chefs Serving Weekend Brunch, & Themed Collaboration Dinners on Mondays

Ponce City Market announces Punk Foodie, an Atlanta pop-up restaurant curator and storytelling platform that amplifies and cultivates the city’s thriving underground and independent food scene, will open a food stall in the Central Food Hall this fall. Named Punk Foodie @ Ponce, the concept will be a restaurant and chef accelerator, with a rotating, curated roster of pop-up chefs that represent the often unheralded diversity and talent driving Atlanta’s future restaurant landscape.

With a mission to champion budding local chefs, grant their culinary creations broader exposure, and enhance their commercial success while enriching Atlanta’s culinary scene, Punk Foodie @ Ponce will be home to one- to two-month chef residences, a monthly rotation of pop-up chefs serving weekend brunch, and themed chef collaboration dinners on Mondays. Guests will be able to explore a variety of cuisines and dishes not easily found across the city.

“Pop-up chefs are creating pictures of the new South through local and global ingredients served in styrofoam take-out boxes from borrowed kitchens and 10×10 tents with tabletop fryers all over the city,” says Sam Flemming, Founder of Punk Foodie. “Now, with the new food stall at Ponce City Market, we’re helping pop-up chefs accelerate to the next level by allowing them to test concepts, build a brand and establish a track record as a means to open brick-and-mortar restaurants that will drive the evolution of Atlanta’s dining scene.”

Upon opening, Ganji will take up residence in the new food stall and serve Asian-inspired fast fusion – American fare infused with Asian essentials and flavors. Ganji Founders Jess Kim and Jun Park are culinary school graduates of Le Cordon Bleu and Culinary Institute of America, respectively, and have extensive experience in kitchens and management positions at multiple Atlanta restaurant groups including Korean Wives, Seed Hospitality and Castellucci Hospitality Group. Other chefs slated for the first month include Mighty Hans (Taiwanese-American), Krupana (Bosnian-ish) and Jimmie’s Jerk Chicken (American Jerk & BBQ). The chefs for a Fripper’s Hot Dog night will be announced in September.

Chefs who are interested in being part of the accelerator program are invited to claim a chef profile on the Punk Foodie ‘pop-up finder’ app. Chefs are selected based on app analytics of their activity and Punk Foodie’s deep understanding of the pop-up scene.

When Punk Foodie Founder Sam Flemming moved to Atlanta, he fell in love with the city’s burgeoning underground dining scene filled with pop-up chefs and food trucks – aspiring restaurateurs serving some of the most interesting, cutting-edge, authentic, and unique food in Atlanta. The whole thing reminded him of a punk rock scene, but for food. This interest led him to launch Punk Foodie in 2021. Today, the Punk Foodie platform consists of @punkfoodie.atl Instagram account, a weekly newsletter, a weekly column in Rough Draft Atlanta, the Road Crew foodie content agency, an events arm that curates chef-driven events like Punk Foodie Fest, and the ‘pop-up finder’ Punk Foodie app. With the launch of Punk Foodie @ Ponce, Punk Foodie now has an integrated and powerful platform that generates content, builds community, provides information, and offers tangible business opportunities to pop-up chefs and the broader independent restaurant scene driving the evolution of the Atlanta dining.

Since opening to the public in 2015, Ponce City Market has become a must-visit place on travelers’ Atlanta bucket lists, a beacon in Atlanta’s skyline and a destination for locals to gather, shop, eat, explore art and cultural happenings, live, and more. Small business owners – both retailers and restaurateurs – have turned their dreams into realities at Ponce City Market, with many starting as pop-ups or within Citizen Supply and expanding into their own spaces, like Pizza JeansCake Culture, Modern Mystic Shop, and Elk Head Clothing. One of Atlanta’s few female restaurateurs, Tal Baum, opened her first concept Bellina Alimentari in 2017, and since has opened a second restaurant at Ponce City Market, Atrium, and Aziza and Falafel Nation at Jamestown’s property Westside Provisions District. Her sixth concept, Carmel, opened earlier this summer at Jamestown-owned Buckhead Village.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER

Posted by Liz and John Attaway, 8/20/23

Always Exploring, Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, FL is a BLAST for space lovers of all ages! We recently adventured down where we relived the Apollo launch at the Apollo/Saturn V Center, then blasted into the future at the NEW Gateway, The Deep Space Complex, followed by a mesmerizing look at the actual Space Shuttle Atlanta, got to chat with an Astronaut, Charlie Walker, and explored the larger-than-life rocket garden. And that just the beginning of the adventure, the adventure has just begun at Kennedy Space Center. To the moon!

Our first stop was to the bus tour to Apollo/Saturn V Center where you go behind the gates onto NASA property and see the Vehicle Assembly Building that’s bigger than three Empire State buildings and even a NASA crawler transporter (it was in the movie Armageddon). Then, enter the world of Apollo 8 and Saturn V, where first you’ll relive the Apollo launch where they immerse you in a lifelike reenactment of the Apollo launch. I was particularly impressed with this and even got goose bumps! Then, head over to the vault where you’ll see Shepard’s space suit, an Apollo capsule, and other cool relics from that time in the Space race. On top of that you can touch a moon rock AND stand underneath the largest rocket ever flown.

After the bus tour, we rode back to the main visitor’s complex and made our way into Gateway, The Deep Space Complex. There we explored visionary human deep space travel designs from SpaceX, NASA, Boeing, and Lockheed Martin including Deep Space Habitat, Starliner from Boeing and their innovative space suit “Rosie.” Interact with a variety of touch screens to explore further into each cutting-edge innovation. Gateway also includes Spaceport KSC, immersive rides that will take you on an epic futuristic journey.

Our Kennedy Space Center adventure then led us to Space Shuttle Atlantis. After a brief video about the shuttle, the curtain raises to reveal the ACTUAL shuttle! The sheer size of the shuttle is absolutely breathtaking. You can explore the orbiter that traveled 126 million miles up close and explore every aspect including what the bed quarters looked like, the toilet, a replica of the controls that actually work, as well as 60 other exhibits, see shuttle-era artifacts, and fun interactive simulators. PLUS, Shuttle Launch Experience that simulates an actual launch into space!

Being huge space lovers, we went to infinity and beyond and got an intimate Chat with an Astronaut. Two times a day, join a small group of Space aficionados for an intimate and thrilling adventure. During this experience, ask questions of one of NASAs astronauts, enjoy an unlimited food buffet with fruit, sandwiches, and hot foods, as well as water and soda. They’re also frosty adult beverages for those 21+ like local beers and wine. Our astronaut was Charlie Walker, an industry payload specialist from 3 Discovery voyages! He told us they DO drink their own pee in space (it is filtered!), that it takes 30 minutes to prepare a meal in space, and the best food is shrimp cocktail. You go home with a signed photo and a coin!

Finally, we took some time to make our way around the Rocket Garden, a “garden” of HUGE ROCKETS! Explore these engineering feats of technology that got us to where we are today. The most fascinating to me was the Titan-Mercury.
Kennedy Space Center is $75 for adults and there are specials on their website. Please note, chat with an Astronaut is extra/an add on.

Courtyard by Marriot Titusville

Beyond Kennedy Space Center, we stayed in the Courtyard by Marriot Titusville at Kennedy Space Center that is the closest hotel to the visitor complex. It is only 10 minutes! Launch into the lobby where you’ll see a NASA space suit, space toys, Lockheed Martin rocket, and small touches like little rocket lights and space related art. They have a bistro and bar with coffee and light bites downstairs, then on the roof is The Space Bar with full food menu and themed cocktails overlooking the inter coastal waterway between Titusville, FL and the Space Center! It’s a beautiful view from the lobby or rooftop.
Then, exploring our large King room, what hits you first is the view! It is the same view as the rooftop bar of the inter coastal. A large comfy king bed literally is beneath the stars with a beautiful space accent wall. Near the window is the circular couch, while the wet bar area is angular lines. The bathroom is also crips, clean, and spacious. Everything screams Space!

Something that makes this hotel special is that you can watch the scheduled launches from Cape Canaveral right from your room, the seating near the water behind the hotel or from the rooftop bar (preferred spot!). We got to see the Falcon 9 SpaceX launch at 11:41pm on 8/6!

The Space Bar

Remember when I mentioned that the Courtyard Titusville has a rooftop bar called The Space Bar? Well, the sky calls to us and we dined in style overlooking the beautiful waterway surrounded by space themed murals, neon signs, and more! Let’s not forget their out of this world tuna poke bowl, marvelous mahi tacos, creative cocktails, creamy deviled eggs, and perfect pretzel. It’s all delicious.

Here’s the details about The Space Bar’s food and drink starting with The Causeway Cosmo cocktail that is tangy cranberry, floral hibiscus, cool lime paired with vodka and triple sec and topped with blue edible glitter. Named after a Beastie Boys song, the Intergalactic Planetary cocktail is cool and sweet, coconut rum, tangy citron, St. Germain floral elderflower liqueur, blue curacao, and pineapple.

We dove into the Deviled eggs & Bacon, a sweet and savory treat with candied bacon, yet creamy and rich inside. It comes with a side of spicy, candied bacon and chips! The Blackened Mahi tacos are creamy and sweet up front with flavorful, meaty fish that is lightly seasoned and enveloped in a grilled shell. Plus, the Tuna Poke bowl is savory tuna, tender, with creamy avocado, spicy aioli, seaweed and a side of wasabi for heat. This one is unique as I’ve never had asparagus in a poke bowl. It adds a crunch that’s good! Finally, the Bavarian Jumbo Pretzel is large and presented hanging! Buttery, warm, crisp outside and soft inside and served with cheese and mustard!

When are you planning your trip to Kennedy Space Center?

ATLAS & THE GARDEN ROOM WRAP SUMMER POP-UP SERIES, REOPEN THIS WEEK WITH NEW KITCHEN + RECONCEPTUALIZED MENUS

Posted by Liz and John Attaway, 8/18/23

After hosting a series of dynamic culinary pop-up experiences this summer, Atlas and The Garden Room are set to officially reopen for full service, with The Garden Room returning today, Wednesday, Aug. 16, and Atlas returning on Thursday, Aug. 17. Both restaurants pushed their creativity and hosted temporary pop-ups including The Choux Box, a very successful dessert pastry boutique as well as the Atlas Underground dining experience in June, July, and early August as the kitchen underwent a refresh. Now both restaurants are returning, just in time for the city’s Michelin Guide buzz, with fully reimagined menus, offering the same elegance and impeccable quality that Atlas and The Garden Room are known for but with new inspiration after Chef Freddy Money’s extensive travels abroad, event participation around the world and lots of research and development throughout the summer.

This reopening will serve as the beginning of a new phase for both restaurants, led by Chef Freddy, Tavistock’s Atlanta Culinary Director. Born and raised in London, England, Chef Freddy began cooking at the age of 16 and went on to develop his culinary skills training in several of the world’s finest Michelin Star-awarded restaurants, including Paco Roncero, El Bulli Catering in Spain and The United Kingdom’s Alain Ducasse Group.

Joining Atlas and The Garden Room in 2019, Chef Freddy quickly took both highly revered Atlanta restaurants to new heights, offering visually stunning dishes with bold and complex flavors. Now, after extensive travels abroad this summer, gathering inspiration, and conducting research and development, Chef is relaunching both restaurants with a realized vision.

“I, and the Atlas team, spent an extensive amount of time redeveloping the cuisine for both restaurants,” said Chef Freddy. “We worked meticulously, creating, and refining several dishes before we selected the final menus. After spending several weeks working on them, we know beyond a doubt that we’ve created something that our guests, new and returning, will love.”

Atlas guests can expect a modern avant-garde approach with a tasting menu that evolves through the seasons. Dishes include Kristal Caviar, Westholme Wagyu, and the signature Chocolate Rocher. The tasting menus will also include wine pairings from Atlas’s esteemed wine cellar. The Atlas Tavern will also feature an a la carte menu, with selected items from the tasting menu.

The Garden Room will offer a 2-course and 3-course prix-fixe menu, with a la carte options also available in the bar area. The menu features incredible dishes like crispy duck salad, Chilean seabass, lobster gratin, prime rib and Yorkshire pudding.

For more information or to make reservations, please visit the Atlas website here and The Garden Room website here. Interviews with Chef Freddy Money and photography are available upon request.

About Atlas: Under renowned culinary leadership, Atlas brings a fresh and innovative approach to traditional cooking.
