FIND YOUR AHHH IN VALDOSTA, GA!

Posted by Liz and John Attaway, 9/11/23

Just a few hours south of Atlanta in South Georgia, Valdosta is the perfect stopping point to relax on the way to Florida or even better for a weekend getaway. They call it finding your “ahhh.” Downtown has everything you could imagine with delicious food destinations, a brewery, a wine bar, shopping, boutique hotels, a local playhouse, artwork to see, all wrapped up in a walkable adventure! Start with staying at the McKey boutique hotel, have dinner at 306 North, take a walking tour of the artwork and murals around downtown, stop for a brew at Georgia Beer Company, and stay for brunch at Downtown Social. So, whether you stop through or stay a while, it’s ahhhmazing. Let’s explore.

The McKey

Where can you stay in Valdosta that SOAKS up everything downtown has to offer? It’s The McKey! A brand new, luxurious 12-room boutique hotel in the historic McKey building. It is steps from restaurants, bars, and shopping. Fun fact: all the suites in the McKey are named after tenants that at one time we’re in the building, like restaurants, law firms, or historical facts like the year the building was constructed, or year the first pecan tree was planted. Each room has its own tribute and photos to go along with it!

We stayed in the S&K Suite that is named after the S&K diner, a local hang out spot nicknamed “sit and kiss,” the suite is thought of as their bridal suite. Feast your eyes upon this one bed, one bath suite, with a spectacular bathroom boasting a massive soaker tub that has changed my mind about baths, a large full-length mirror and sitting area, two spacious vanities, a separated shower and toilet area. If I could have a bathroom at home, this would do! Then, on to the bedroom where there is a large, comfy long bed with a view of downtown right out the window! In the sitting area and kitchenette, it’s the perfect spot to relax with a glass of wine and chat about everything you want to do in downtown Valdosta!

306 North

Southern fare was on our mind, so we visited 306 North in downtown Valdosta! They have elevated traditional Southern dishes like fried green tomatoes, fried duck, salads, and even Tuna Tataki, all paired with a great cocktail menu, wine list, and beer selection.

Starting with this fresh Tuna Tataki, the fish is lightly seared and surrounded by creamy, spicy mayonnaise, a wonderful cilantro soy vinaigrette, pickled ginger, and a spicy wasabi cream to round out the dish. It is a delicious start to our meal. Then, we paired it with their amazing fried green tomatoes. The tomatoes themselves are crunchy yet tender and topped with a sensational, sharp pimento cheese and a spicy, sweet pepper jelly. It’s a flavor train!

To drink, we tried their Manhattan. This one is boozy with hints of cinnamon and cherry! A delicious accoutrement with our main, the duck breast! On the side, we started our main dish with the wedge salad. It is creamy and cool, crisp bacon, tomatoes, and peas atop a mild blue cheese dressing. The perfect pair for the Maple Farms Duck breast.

The Maple Farms Duck Breast is lightly fried and crunchy out, tender and juicy in, then topped with a delicious and tangy, sweet blackberry jam reduction that is just stunning with the savory of the duck. On the plate with the duck, we got the Balsamic Mushrooms that are savory and deep, earthy and the honey-truffle sweet potatoes are sweet and tangy, tender, hints of truffle and honey!

Georgia Beer Company

After our scrumptious meal, we took a short walk to look at the murals and artwork around Valdosta, GA! All on the way to a great brewery, Georgia Beer Company! They have a large list of brews to choose from, like stouts, sours, IPAs, lagers, and everything in between. The space is large and open with a long bar, table seating, and a huge outdoor space with live music!

Some of the beers we sampled included the Destress Express sensational coffee milk stout with a coffee forward nose and on the palate then mellowing into a creamy yet slightly bitter aftertaste. Being only 6.5% it is more like a cup of Joe than a boozy stout. Another favorite was the Blueberry Field Party Blonde Ale, a 5% blueberry forward beer on the nose and palate, very fruity. If you love sours, Grandmas Jelly Mayhaw Berry Sour is a 5.3% tangy and tart beer but not overpowering and refreshing.

Of the rest we sampled, the Foggy Bottom is a 7% west coast IPA, large hops, bitter on the back, while Azalea City amber ale is a 5.5% malty yet balanced, mellow, and smooth amber. Dark 30 Black IPA is a 6% beer that’s both toasty and hoppy, while the Back Nine Lager is a smooth, sippable light beer that only has 130 calories! You really can’t go wrong with any of these beers from Georgia Beer Company!

Downtown Social

One morning, we were craving brunch, so we headed just around the corner from The McKey over to Downtown social. Their shareable brunch was right up our alley! Downtown Social is an incredible boutique bowling and game destination with a large full bar and shareable bite menu! We enjoyed the shareable brunch board, mimosa flight, breakfast empanadas, and even a bowl of tot-chos!

We just couldn’t resist their shareable brunch board stuffed with all the brunch goodies like sweet and crispy waffles, crunchy, tender chicken tenders (Pro tip: make chicken and waffles), savory egg frittata, flaky, buttery biscuits with savory sausage gravy, sweet French toast sticks, fruit, jam, honey, and a helping of bacon and sausage on the side! It will blow your mind! To pair with this we got the super cool mimosa flight with sweet and floral pea flower, bright pineapple, sweet cherry, and tangy orange!

The other two dishes we tried were the Breakfast Empanadas and the Tot-chos. The empanadas were crunchy outside warm in with spicy chorizo and jalapeño surrounded by egg, paired with bright pico and a sharp beer cheese. For our side, we got an amazing fruit bowl filled with blueberries and strawberries. Another fun dish is Tot-chos. Starting with a savory egg that’s over a bed of crispy warm Tots with sharp beer cheese, savory pulled brisket, and tangy peppers. Either way, you’re in for a treat.

Valdosta has so much to do, you should get down there for a weekend trip and soak up all the relaxation and fun you can!

NETHERWORLD RETURNS THIS FALL FOR ITS 27TH SEASON OF SCREAMS

Posted by Liz and John Attaway, 9/4/23

Prepare to Encounter Two, New Terrifying Haunts: PRIMORDIAL and CRYPTID CHAOS

Sept. 22-23 and 29-30
Oct. 1, 5-8, 10-15, 17-31
Nov. 3-5, 10-11
Open nightly at 7 p.m., closing times will vary

This September, the iron-bound doors of NETHERWORLD Haunted House will be groaning open once more to unveil the unspeakable horrors that lurk within! Celebrating its 27th Season of Screams, the acclaimed attraction returns with two new haunt themes during its Opening Weekend on Friday, Sept. 22 and Saturday, Sept. 23. The haunted attraction will also be open select dates in October and November.

After close to three decades the legendary NETHERWORLD continues to shock and amaze even the most experienced haunted house guests each year with its intricate sets, next-level special effects, and terrifyingly realistic monsters. Located in Stone Mountain, GA, fear fans from far and wide will gather to experience Atlanta’s ultimate Halloween event with two incredible haunted attractions, PRIMORDIAL and CRYPTID CHAOS!

PRIMORDIAL is a continuation of The Undying Horror tale experienced by NETHERWORLD fans last year. This time, elemental beings of water, wind, Earth, and fire fueled by the energy of the gateway to the NETHERWORLD have emerged into our universe, seeking to destroy all of the Netherspawn that had arrived before them!

In CRYPTID CHAOS, the nefarious Boogeyman has returned to create his own twisted world of living nightmares. To fulfill his nightmarish fantasy, he begins to drain the dark energy of the Cryptid Creatures imprisoned in a secret facility known as the BOX. But, before he can consume them, the creatures fight back, mutating the BOX staff into murderous urban legends and battling the Boogeyman to place a new Cryptid Creature at the top of the food chain!

With a passion for all things frightening and an expansive background in film, television, and the haunted attraction industry, the co-founders of NETHERWORLD, Ben Armstrong and Billy Messina, have consistently designed experiences that make horror lovers feel they’ve walked right into their most twisted nightmare, and this season, they’re taking the thrill up another level.

“This year’s haunts are totally overloaded with an insane amount of intense new experiences. Each season we always try to make the haunts even more over the top, but this year is just crazy!” said Armstrong. “We’re excited for our fans and newcomers to experience the WOW moments that both of our new haunts are guaranteed to bring!”

Fearless mortals who make it through the haunted houses will encounter a treat waiting for them after they exit, the Halloween festival-styled Midway. Patrons will be greeted by roaming creatures, a massive dragon, huge jack-o-lanterns, and Instagram-worthy photo ops. Food options galore will also be available, including demented donuts, hot dogs, nachos, gourmet popcorn and NEW this year: fudge, pretzels, and bratwurst. Guests can also get their hands on last year’s fan-favorite, Dr. Octane’s Bizarre Beverages, where the sinister mad scientist Dr. Octane will serve up several flavors of tasty non-alcoholic bubbling concoctions featuring swirls of colors!

If you dare, continue reading to learn more about this year’s two new haunts:

PRIMORDIAL: To prevent the Undying Horror from birthing an endless horde of hideous monsters, the gateway to the NETHERWORLD from which it drew its energy was diverted to a hidden universe of ELEMENTAL power by the Brotherhood of Rhomb. Suddenly, beings of water, wind, Earth, and fire began emerging into our world seeking to destroy all of the Netherspawn that had arrived before them. Will this battle finally end the evil from the NETHERWORLD or will all of mankind and the NETHERWORLD fall to the PRIMORDIAL power that has been set free?

Featuring: The Sunken City of Horrors, The Lure of the Mermaids, Crushed by the Kraken, Massacred by the Mammoth, The Frozen Tombs of Whyshburg, Battered by the Beast Men, Stone Golems of Earth and Lava, Shrine of the Zombie Queen, Incinerated by the Fire Demons, In the Cave of the Dragon, Temple of the Bat Beasts and the Pit of the Demiurge and more out of control, amped up, enraged, elemental action than your fragile mind can comprehend!

CRYPTID CHAOS: To bring a world of living nightmares into physical reality, the dream stalker known as the Boogeyman needed massive amounts of dark energy from the unfathomable realms of its origin. Twisting and infecting the thoughts of the scientists at the secret facility known as the BOX, it tricked them into collecting Cryptids, creatures of myth and legend from all over the world and trapping them so that it could feed on their power and grow strong beyond all comprehension. But these weird entities fought back, transforming the staff into urban legends, and engaging the Boogeyman in a Battle Royale to place a new Cryptid Creature at the top of the food chain!

Featuring: Chupacabra Chaos, The Mothman Massacre, The Yeti in Chains, Trampled by the Jersey Devil, Flight of the Banshee, The Mongolian Death Worm, Haunted by the Hellhound, The Wail of the Sirenhead, The Prey of Pigzilla, Threatened by the Thunderbird, The Sinister Surgeries of Dr. Squid, Death by the Dog Man, The Lair of the Lake Monster and the Nightmare World of the Boogeyman.

NOTHING SAYS FALL LIKE THE ARRIVAL OF PERC COFFEE TO LARKIN ON MEMORIAL

Posted by Liz and John Attaway, 9/4/23

On the heels of celebrating its 5-year anniversary, Larkin on Memorial, the 63,000-square-foot mixed-use development by Paces Properties, is set to welcome PERC Coffee this fall. Known for its flavorful brews and upbeat atmosphere, PERC Coffee will occupy 1,500 square feet, plus 500 square feet of patio space.

“We couldn’t be happier to have PERC Coffee joining the development later this year and Birdcage coming early next year,” said Paces Properties President & CEO David Cochran. “Both will be a fantastic fit for the Grant Park neighborhood and serve as places where residents can come enjoy delicious food and drink in a welcoming and engaging environment.”

With this latest addition, Larkin on Memorial is now 88% leased, including Ace Hardware, East Atlanta Oral Surgery, Firepit Pizza Tavern, Grant Park Market, Kale Me Crazy, Lush Nail Bar, My Salon Suite, Ramen Station, Squash Blossom, Primrose Schools, Vibe Ride, and now, PERC Coffee. There is one 2,500-square-foot (plus 500 square feet of patio space) space available for an additional full-service restaurant tenant, as well as two in-line retail spaces available.

Founded in 2020, PERC Coffee is on a mission to share good times and amazing coffee while creating spaces with fun, nostalgic vibes. PERC Coffee Grant Park will be the brand’s fourth location, with storefronts open in East Lake, Virginia Highlands, and Savannah, and another location underway in Tucker. The shop offers a full coffee menu with specialty and seasonal espresso drinks, including its signature GoodTimes Latte with lavender, vanilla, and habanero sugar. The food menu includes made-to-order breakfast sandwiches, granola bowls, a breakfast crunchwrap, and lighter lunch options.

The shop itself will be open and full of bright colors to match the vibe of the PERC Coffee brand. Featuring a custom pink La Marzocco Linea PB Espresso Machine, the espresso bar will sit above a glowing lightning bolt, and both the interior and exterior will feature hand-painted murals by Chris Sturdivant of The Debonair Signman, designed by “graphic guru” Brad Praria.

“We look for spaces where we can connect with the neighborhood,” said Philip Brown, Owner/Founder/CEO of PERC Coffee. “Everything lined up, and we knew it was time to join the Larkin on Memorial community. The space is perfect, and we love the neighborhood. We cannot wait to party with the folks in Grant Park.”

In addition to PERC, Larkin on Memorial will also welcome Birdcage in early 2024, an eatery from Leslie Cohen, owner of Firepit Pizza Tavern. Located adjacent to Cohen’s popular pizza tavern, the 3,000-square-foot freestanding building will be filled with vibrant colors, flamboyant vibes, Latin-inspired signature and seasonal dishes, innovative cocktails, craft beers, wine, and more. Additional details will be available in the coming months.

“It’s a dream to be back working on leasing with the Paces team especially on Larkin on Memorial,” said Laura King, Founder of Alcove Commercial Real Estate. “Having worked on this project at its inception and seeing how it’s come together, it’s no surprise that PERC is the absolute perfect complement to the Larkin tenant lineup. Their commitment to teamwork, inclusivity, and all-around love for coffee and community is a model that encompasses the Larkin on Memorial vision.”
