HORIZON THEATRE TO HOST 27TH ANNUAL NEW SOUTH YOUNG PLAYWRIGHTS FESTIVAL THROUGH JUNE 7

Posted by Liz and John Attaway, 6/2/25

Next generation of writers to sharpen their skills with week of performances,
playwrighting workshops and seminars

Inman Park’s Horizon Theatre is hosting over two dozen talented young playwrights from across the country in its 27th Annual New South Young Playwrights Festival (NSYPF)June 1 – 7. From a wide pool of script submissions from college students nationwide, the theatre company selected 25 aspiring writers to attend the free week-long intensive. The chosen students will be able to flex their creative muscles in a packed week of playwrighting workshops and seminars with professional theatre actors, directors and playwrights. NSYPF will culminate in a free showcase of the new works. The New South Young Playwrights 5-Minute Play Festival will be hosted onstage at Horizon Theatre at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 7.

On May 2, the National Endowment for the Arts rescinded Horizon Theatre’s $30,000 grant that funds the New South Young Playwrights Festival annually. As the grant was initially awarded in November 2024, Horizon was in the final stages of planning for the festival— students had been accepted, personnel hired, airline tickets and housing reserved.  Despite the sudden loss of funding, Horizon was able to move forward with the festival as planned due to the generous support of individual and foundation donors.

The New South Young Playwrights Festival is our most nationally impactful program, identifying and nurturing writers that have gone on to major careers in theatre, television and film,” said Horizon Theatre Co-Artistic/Producing Director Lisa Adler. “These young writers are at Horizon from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. every day of the festival, learning and growing in a supportive, nurturing environment. We focus on introducing them to the world of professional theatre and media writing, building their skills, bringing in professional artists to perform their plays, and creating a community of fellow writers and mentors that can sustain them long after the Festival. It’s an intensive experience that hundreds of NSYPF alumni have called truly life-changing.  We are eternally grateful for the donors who stepped up to help us ensure the show can go on! It’s an honor to give these gifted young people a chance to shine, and we hope to continue this tradition for years to come. The future is bright with this next generation of talented playwrights.”

The lead mentors for this year’s New South Young Playwrights Festival are professional playwrights and educators France-Luce Benson, Kira Rockwell and Crystal Skillman.  France-Luce Benson is a Haitian-American playwright and Assistant Professor at CSU San Marcos. Her plays have been produced and developed in New York by Atlantic Theatre Company, Ensemble Studio Theatre, The Billy Holiday Theatre, The New Black Fest, Apollo Theatre, New Perspectives Theatre, The Fire This Time Festival, and regionally by Crossroads Theatre, The Fountain Theatre, Juggernaut and City Theatre Miami, among others. Internationally, her works have been shown at the Afropea Festival in Marseilles, France; and Global Voices Theatre in London. Kira Rockwell teaches Dramatic Writing for the Stage and Screen at Georgia State University. Her work has also been developed with The Kennedy Center, NNPN, Great Plains Theatre Commons, Working Title Playwrights and more. Returning for her second year as a lead mentor Crystal Skillman, a professor at The New School (NYC) and Pace University, is an internationally acclaimed playwright whose Rain and Zoe Save the World premiered in the UK in 2022 and whose award-winning musical Mary and Max had its sold-out, critically acclaimed premiere at the largest theatre in Austria, Theatre Linz. Her play The Rocket Men will be produced in Atlanta by Synchronicity Theatre this fall.  The Festival is also led by three associate mentors who are currently pursuing their MFA in playwritingMo Holmes (Columbia), Ellie Melick (Carnegie Mellon), and M Kamara (Southern Illinois University Carbondale).

The 25 winners of the New South Young Playwrights Festival will visit Horizon Theatre from colleges nationwide, including: Columbia College Chicago, Bennington College, Temple University, Augsburg University, Carnegie Mellon University, Wake Forest University, Palm Beach State College, Georgia State University, Troy University, Howard University, University of North Carolina, Agnes Scott College, Emory University, Ohio University, University of Virginia, San Diego State University, North Carolina Central University, Oglethorpe University and Clark Atlanta University.

As a part of the festival, the students will also be tasked with drafting a new short play to be featured in the 27th Annual New South Young Playwrights 5-Minute Play Festival. During the intensive, the plays will be workshopped and rehearsed with professional Atlanta actors taking on the roles. The week will culminate in the New South Young Playwrights Short Play Festival, a public reading and showcase of the students’ work on Saturday, June 7 at 2 p.m. The NSPF Short Play Festival is free and open to the public.  No reservation is required.

The Festival is made possible this year by the George M. Brown Trust Fund, generous individual donors, and Horizon’s season sponsors: City of Atlanta Mayors Office of Cultural Affairs, the Fulton County Board of Commissioners, the Georgia Council for the Arts and The Shubert Foundation. Local restaurant partners providing meals for participants as in-kind support include Hudson Grille, Flying Biscuit, The Albert, Wylie and Rum, Barcelona Wine Bar, Donnie’s Donuts, Elmyr, Wrecking Bar Brewpub, Savage Pizza, BarTaco, Ali Baba Mediterranean, Mezcalito’s, The Daily, Gene’s BBQ and MetroFresh.

THE GRANT PARK CONSERVANCY SUMMER SHADE FESTIVAL RETURNS AUGUST 23-24, 2025

Posted by Liz and John Attaway, 6/2/25

A Free End of Summer Celebration Filled with Art, Eats, Vintage Finds, Live Music, Deep South Wrestling, and Family Fun in Atlanta
s Oldest Park

Now in its 23rd year, the Summer Shade Festival has become one of Atlanta’s most anticipated end-of-summer traditions. Presented by and benefiting the Grant Park Conservancy, the free, two-day festival returns Saturday, August 23 and Sunday, August 24, 2025, with live music, a curated artist and vintage market, family-friendly fun, and some of the city’s best bites and sips—set in one of Atlanta’s most historic and storied green spaces.

Running 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, this year’s festival brings something for everyone—from families and art lovers to vintage collectors, music fans, and weekend wanderers. The Main Stage and the Gazebo Stage will host a full lineup of live performances all weekend long. Around the restored Milledge Fountain, a curated vintage experience by GVG Events (formerly Georgia Vintage Goods) will join 140+ regional artists around the park, turning this vibrant space into a can’t-miss hub of sound, style, and creativity.

Additional highlights include two daily performances by Deep South Wrestling near the Gazebo, plus free family programming like the Kids’ Bouncy House Village, face painting, and the Sunday morning Move & Groove activation hosted by the Grant Park Parents Network. From yoga in the grass to dancing under the trees and a bike valet for cyclists, surprises and discoveries await around every corner. Whether it’s the twenty-third visit or the very first, this is where summer goes out in style.

What began as a small neighborhood gathering has grown into one of Atlanta’s most beloved traditions. The Summer Shade Festival is more than a party in the park—it’s a celebration of creativity, connection, and the mission of the Grant Park Conservancy, the nonprofit dedicated to preserving and enhancing the park’s 131 acres. From ecological care to major restoration projects, the Conservancy works year-round to preserve, maintain, and beautify this vital green space for everyone to enjoy. Summer Shade is its biggest fundraiser of the year—and one unforgettable way to give back to the park that gives so much to Atlanta.

Festivities officially kick off Saturday at 8 a.m. with the Adams Realtors Run for the Park 5K, a neighborhood run and community fundraiser that winds through Grant Park’s historic streets and directly supports the Conservancy’s year-round work. Runners, walkers, and strollers are all welcome. Registration is now open at summershadefestival.org

To learn more, donate, or get involved, visit www.gpconservancy.org. Forupdates on the festival, visit www.summershadefestival.org or follow along at @grantpark.atlanta on Instagram and Facebook.com/SummerShadeFestival.

HERMANITA HEATS UP WILD HEAVEN AVONDALE THIS SUMMER

Posted by Liz and John Attaway, 5/29/25

Peruvian Street Fare, Cold Beer and Big Patio Energy Collide for a Summer Residency

Beginning Thursday, June 12 through Sunday, July 13, 2025

This summer, the grill is hot, the beer is cold, and Hermanita is moving in. The fiery little sister of Tio Lucho’s, dreamed up by James Beard-nominated Chef Arnaldo Castillo, is taking over Wild Heaven Beer’s Avondale patio for a monthlong summer residency beginning Thursday, June 12 through Sunday, July 13, 2025.

A love letter to Peruvian street food with a Southern twist, Hermanita brings serious flavor to the pavement: think flame-licked Pollo a la Brasa, sizzling Anticuchos skewers, and rotating sides inspired by Castillo’s childhood and his signature flair for bright, crave-worthy seasoning. It’s the kind of food that begs for a beer, which makes Wild Heaven the perfect match.

“Beer has always been the ultimate companion to great food, and at Wild Heaven, we’re continuing to build thoughtful culinary partnerships across all our concepts,” says Nick Purdy, co-founder of Wild Heaven Beer. “We’re huge fans of Tio Lucho’s and Chef Arnaldo, so welcoming Hermanita to our Avondale patio this summer felt like a perfect fit. We know our guests will love it.”

Set against the laid-back backdrop of Wild Heaven’s original Avondale location—known for its expansive patio, inventive brews, and come-as-you-are energy, Hermanita’s summer residency invites locals and visitors alike to grab a pint and some delicious Peruvian street food and dig in.

Expect juicy charcoal-roasted chicken by the quarter, half, or whole, spiced to perfection and paired with Castillo’s lineup of tangy housemade salsas. Anticuchos will rotate between beef heart, sirloin, and chicken thigh, all grilled to order. Sides might include chalaca-topped iceberg, aji amarillo mac and cheese, smashed cucumber salad with chili crisp, and more. A few surprises? Always.

“Hermanita has been a really special project for me—a way to cook the kind of food I grew up with in a way that feels personal and fun. The response at Tio Lucho’s has been incredible, and moving the concept to Wild Heaven for the summer felt like the right next step,” says Tio Lucho’s Co-Owner and Executive Chef Arnaldo Castillo. “It gives us more room to play, more people to reach, and the chance to bring these flavors to a whole new community. I’m excited to fire up the grill and keep telling this story through the food.”

Hermanita is open daily for lunch and dinner Friday through Sunday beginning at 11:30 a.m. at Wild Heaven Beer Avondale at 135B Maple St, Avondale Estates, GA 30002.
