EXPLORE ANTARCTICA’S LIVELY PAST IN FERNBANK’S NEWEST EXHIBIT ‘ANTARCTIC DINOSAURS’

Posted by Liz and John Attaway, 10/10/21

Opening This Weekend with Special Events, Exhibit to Run Oct. 9, 2021 – Jan. 2, 2022
Museum to also Debut “Dinosaurs of Antarctica’ Film + Welcomes Paleontologist + Paleobotanist from Feature

Antarctica hasn’t always been icy and barren. Around 200 million years ago, it was a lush, temperate region, home to crocodile-sized amphibians and rhinoceros-sized dinosaurs. On Oct. 9, Fernbank Museum’s newest exhibition, ‘Antarctic Dinosaurs,’ will reveal this lost world. Visitors will be able to see and touch real fossils from Antarctica, along with full-sized replicas showing how the dinosaurs and their habitat would have looked during this time.

The exhibition will contain artifacts from both historical and modern expeditions, including the sledge used by one of the first Antarctic adventurers over 100 years ago and the thick red parkas worn by scientists exploring Antarctica today. Visitors will get a sense of what goes into living and working in the coldest spot on earth.

After exploring the science being conducted in Antarctica, guests will discover the fruits of this labor: dinosaurs. With real bones and artifacts on display, guests will get a first-hand look at the most remarkable findings from the icy continent. Along with real artifacts, guests will experience naturalistic dioramas, featuring life-like sculptures of a variety of dinosaurs from Antarctica. These dioramas and sculptures paint an intricate picture of what Antarctica once looked like hundreds of millions of years ago.

The exhibition features four species of dinosaur: the 25-foot-long predator Cryolophosaurus (“frozen crested lizard,” named for the bony ornamentation on its head), the rhino-sized herbivore Glacialisaurus and two new species that haven’t even been scientifically described yet. These new dinosaurs are sauropodomorphs, early relatives of two giant long-necked, four-legged herbivores like Brachiosaurus and titanosaurs.

“This year marks the 20th anniversary of Fernbank’s Giants of the Mesozoic exhibition, so it seems only fitting that we would host another ground-breaking dinosaur exhibition,” said Fernbank’s VP of Programming Bobbi Hohmann. “Antarctic Dinosaurs is a spectacular exhibition that showcases dinosaurs that our visitors have likely never seen before, as well as the extremes scientists go through to make these kinds of amazing discoveries and contributions to science.”

‘Antarctic Dinosaurs’ also comes with interactive elements. As guests make their way through an Antarctic “expedition” they can touch a stone housing real fossils from Antarctica, explore tectonic plates through puzzles, discover the science behind the polar lights and midnight sun and see how the continents once fit together.

Tickets and Visitor Information: ‘Antarctic Dinosaurs’ is included with general admission and is free for Fernbank members. Timed, online tickets are required in advance at FernbankMuseum.org at $20 for adults, $19 for seniors and $18 for children*. To purchase tickets or view pre-visit information, frequently asked questions, safety protocols and more, visit FernbankMuseum.org

‘Antarctic Dinosaurs’ will be on view daily from Saturday, October 9, 2021, through Monday, January 2, 2022, from 10am to 5pm, along with evening hours during Fernbank After Dark** on Oct. 8 (exclusive exhibit preview), Nov. 12 and Dec. 10.

*Tickets not purchased online are $19.95-$21.95 and may not be available due to safety precautions that limit capacity. **Ages 21+ only.

MEALS ON WHEELS HOSTS SAVOR AND TASTE AT CHATTAHOOCHE FOOD WORKS – POSTPONED

A Modern Twist on Atlanta’s 33-Year-Old Fundraiser

November 5, 2021

Tickets: here.

We are thrilled to announce that on Friday, November 5, MOWA will be back with a modern twist on the 33-year old fundraising event, A Meal to Remember newly branded as SAVOR & TASTE. This extraordinary food and music event will be hosted at The Works and Chattahoochee Food Works on Atlanta’s Upper Westside.

Since 1988, the Meals on Wheels Atlanta community has supported the nonprofit’s efforts to end senior hunger by sponsoring, attending, and donating to A Meal To Remember, the most important fundraiser of the year.

Every year, A Meal To Remember has been the first Friday in November. MOWA has hosted this event at Atlanta venues such as The St. Regis Hotel and Flourish. Guests have enjoyed coursed gourmet dinners prepared by well-known celebrity chefs, accompanied by exquisite wine pairings, while surrounded by the stunning decor and breathtaking flowers. In 2019, MOWA raised almost $800,000.

In 2020, due to the COVID-19, MOWA was not able to host this annual event. While donors still supported MOWA minimally, the financial support was not enough to sustain the organization’s fundamental efforts. At the same time, senior hunger has been on the rise due to the pandemic’s devastating effect.

THIS YEAR’S EVENT FACTS

·     SAVOR is the traditional coursed gourmet dinner, wine pairings, live auction, and live entertainment. SAVOR is located in the Gallery Space at The Works, featuring Chattahoochee Food Works Owner and Emmy and James Beard Award-winning chef Andrew Zimmern alongside Meals on Wheels’ Atlanta award winning chef Robert Gerstenecker. Joining them are three Atlanta-based chefs including Deborah VanTrece of The Catering Company, Chef Matthew Basford from Canoe and Four Seasons Hotel Atlanta Pastry Chef Charles Barrett. SAVOR takes place at 6:30pm.

·     TASTE takes place in the industrial glam food hall, Chattahoochee Food Works owned by partners Robert Montwaid and Andrew Zimmern. Guests will enjoy unlimited curated “tastes” and themed beverages along with live music from over 25 food and beverage vendors in the 22,000 square foot hall. TASTE takes place from7:30pm to Midnight.

YAO Atlanta

Posted by Liz and John Attaway, 10/6/21

The moment you step into Yao, you’re met with a long, ornate bar and lounge area that’s dressed to the nines. Beyond the beautiful entry, the dining room is stunning, dotted with blue, cool chairs and a vaulted, soaring ceiling that houses a large wood wall. What Yao does so well is marry the stunning ambiance with the delectable food and sippable cocktails seamlessly. They do everything with beauty and grace, like the stunning Yao’s Ice Cream, gorgeous Salt and Pepper Whole Fish, plump Pork Belly, divine Duck Salad, as well as the amazing cocktails! Let’s take a tour, shall we?

Sitting and gazing into the dining room, we started with two amazing cocktails, the Mr. Yao and the Cherish. The favorite of the two is the Mr. Yao cocktail that starts out sweet, then morphs into a tangy, earthy, sour sip. It’s complex from start to finish with a distinct wine flavor that gives it a defined earthiness! The gorgeous The Cherish is easy on the eyes and the tongue. The cocktail is one part tangy and the other foamy with an almost floral and earthy end. It’s dynamic and sippable.

Moving into the small plates and appetizers, we were thrilled with the little watermelon bite they brought us prior to our meal. It is the cutest little dish in a small spoon with a huge Yao flag sticking out the top. The bite itself is sweet, salty, and an earthy light crunch. It is such a good little bite! Of the appetizers and small plates, we have to state up front, we’re huge pork belly fiends. If it’s on the menu, we get it. If you get one appetizer or small plate at Yao, please get the Pork Belly. It’s a perfectly cooked, tender piece of meat with a rich and buttery first bite finished with a hearty soy back. Plus, the addition of the dried fish gives it extra saltiness to complete the flavor complexity! Some of the best pork belly we’ve ever had, and we’ve had a lot.  Another one of our favorites is the Duck Salad. Absolutely eye-catching and heaping, the skin-on duck itself is rich and crunchy, while the sauce is slightly sweet with tangy pomegranate and earthy pine nuts. The greens brighten this dish, and it’s stellar, never had anything like it.

.

On to the entrée, we settled on the Salt and Pepper Fish and we’re so glad we did. Beyond the STUNNING presentation, the fish is flaky inside surrounded by a light crunch and brightened by the tangy scallions and garlic below the fish. Then, we paired it with the Sichuan Green Beans that were a good balance of spice, savory, and crunch. The best part is down in the bottom where the sauce pools. One of the best things you can do here is to mix and match the flavors of the fish and the green beans. It’s divine.

Whatever you do, stay for dessert and the Yao’s Ice Cream is an experience all it’s own. Surrounded by dry ice a served SMOKING, not only is it beautiful and the presentation flawless, but the flavor is creamy and smooth!  The addition of the salted egg yoke provides for a change in flavor profile and texture! Then, you have to eat to the back for a gelatinous surprise! The perfect way to end this fantastic meal.

Are you ready to go Yao? What would you try?

  • RoleCall Theater’s Spooky Season Productions (October & November) – RoleCall Theater will present two chilling productions this October and November: Macbeth and Frankenstein. Retold by the three Fates of Roman mythology, Frankenstein returns to the hands of women practically for the first time since Mary Shelley completed it. Far from the groaning Hollywood monsters, ripped bodices and drafty castles of popular imagination, this production centers around the bone-deep psychological horrors of abandonment, rag and irrevocable mistakes in the making. How much can a man take, after all, before he becomes a monster?
In RoleCall’s iteration of Macbeth, the play begins when he is a brave and loyal thane to King Duncan. However, after hearing a prophecy that he will become king himself, Macbeth is overcome by ambition and greed. Encouraged by the prophecy and his scheming wife, Macbeth goes down a dark path of murder to try to seize the throne. Tickets are available here for both productions.
