29TH ANNUAL TASTE OF ALPHARETTA

Posted by Liz and John Attaway, 4/7/19

Thursday, May 2nd 5pm

Downtown Alpharetta

Information here.

Alpharetta – More than 62 restaurants will be ready to dish out their specialties on Thursday, May 2, 2019 as Taste of Alpharetta celebrates its 29th year. Taste of Alpharetta attracts more than 35,000 patrons between 5-10 pm, and takes place in Downtown Alpharetta, encompassing Milton Avenue, Roswell Street, Old Roswell Street, Canton Street and Old Canton Street. In addition to fantastic food, patrons will enjoy a culinary competition, live music on 3 stages, family Fun Zone and more. This year the city is adding a few new features to the event, including a beer garden presented by Smile Generation full of local brews, and a “Locally Grown” area featuring fun and educational activities put on by food-focused community organizations.

We are excited to announce The Taste of Alpharetta is partnering with Second Helpings Atlanta for the event’s food rescue.  Each restaurant will have the opportunity to donate left over food, at the end of the event, to Second Helpings Atlanta.  Since 2004, Second Helpings Atlanta’s community of volunteers has been picking up surplus, nutritious, perishable and prepared food and delivering it to the many front-line agencies in the Metro Atlanta area that feed the hungry every day.  This donated food gets diverted from landfills and is used to feed those in need, making Atlanta a more environmentally responsible metropolitan area.

This FREE admission event invites patrons to purchase food and activity tickets – 10 tickets for $5.00. Tickets are redeemed at participating restaurant booths for a wide selection of tastes that range from $.50 – $4.00 per sample.  Tickets may also be redeemed in the “Locally Grown” area and Fun Zone area for a variety of activities including engaging educational experiences, inflatables and a variety of children’s activities.

Local chefs will compete in the Taste of Alpharetta Culinary Competition from 5pm – 7pm, with select chefs conducting cooking demonstrations on the Culinary Competition Stage. The Taste of Alpharetta Culinary Competition Awards will be presented at 8:30pm for the top chefs in each category. Come visit the new Culinary Stage location on Roswell St and cheer on your favorite chefs. As well as vote for your favorite restaurant in the 2019 People’s Choice Award.

It’s a Polenta Party!

Posted by Liz and John Attaway, 4/5/19

The White Bull

Decatur, GA

Last Saturday, we were invited to The White Bull to experience something we’d never even heard of, a Polenta Party. Polenta is what this southerner would equate to grits and can be dressed with similar ingredients, like cream or cheese to make it delicious. What is even more amazing is how it’s served, which is down the middle of a table, still steaming! The polenta itself was creamy, ooey-gooey, a bit savory, and delicious on it’s own. They don’t stop there, The White Bull takes whatever meat came in that day and put it right on top. Yes, right on top, down the middle of the table! We hit the meat jackpot today, because it was fresh, thigh meat chicken and a savory pulled pork ragu. First off, the pulled pork ragu was one of the best meat concoctions we’ve ever put in our mouths with very tender pork paired with a deep and savory ragu. It’s official, we heart ragu. Then, the chicken was the freshest we’ve ever had!

Beyond the delectable meat, they added several vegetables on top, and yes, right down the middle of the table! Today’s fresh veggies included broccoli, leaks, mushroom with peas, and asparagus. Let’s stop a minute here and let me discuss the broccoli with you. This isn’t your grandmother’s soggy broccoli, but a crisp, tender, olive oil drizzled star. It was like they either air or flash fried the florets, which was the right balance of crunch and savor. Also, the leaks were a perfect compliment to the polenta. It gave it a little bit of a bite, a brightness you wouldn’t have gotten otherwise. It could have been a very heavy meal, but the addition of the light broccoli, bright leaks, grilled asparagus, and 25 year old balsamic drizzle on top, created a good balance.

If you want a truly enjoyable experience with your family or friends, this is one for the books. Make sure you like your tablemates, as this is a shareable, tabletop, interactive, experience. Good thing we were with amazing company. You only need 6 people to join in on a Polenta Party at The White Bull. Mark our words, we’ll be back there!
