PONCE CITY MARKET TEAMS UP WITH UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA AND GEORGIA AQUARIUM TO HOST FIRST ANNUAL ‘PCM OYSTER SOCIAL’ ON THURSDAY, MARCH 28

Located on The Roof at PCM, Event Will Feature Oyster Tastings from Local Restaurants, Live Music, Specially Crafted Cocktails, Live Painting, a Short Film Screening & More

Benefitting UGA’s Marine Extension & Georgia Sea Grant

Ponce City Market is teaming up with the University of Georgia Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant and Georgia Aquarium to host the first annual PCM Oyster Social on Thursday, March 28 in support of Georgia’s oyster industry. Held on The Roof at Ponce City Market from 6-9pm, the event will feature oyster tastings from local restaurants including The Optimist, W.H. Stiles Fish Camp, Brezza Cucina and Root Baking Co., live music from Sweet Auburn String Band, specially crafted cocktails, beer from Georgia Aquarium’s collaboration with Atlanta Brewing Company, live painting by local artists and more.

Shifting Baselines, a short film by Cathy J. Sakas and Mehmet Caglayan, will give guests a deeper glimpse into the commercial fishing industry in the state of Georgia, and educators from Georgia Aquarium and UGA Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant will be present to discuss how important oysters are to maintaining healthy coastal environments. Guests will also be able to learn how to shuck their own oysters while connecting with UGA Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant employees who are working with shellfish growers to grow and farm local Georgia oysters for the restaurant industry. André Gallant, a writer, editor and photojournalist based in Athens, will be present to sign books and discuss the local oyster community. He is the author of “The High Low Tide,” a book-length work of narrative nonfiction about the Georgia oyster industry published by UGA Press in 2019.

Providing research, education, training and science-based outreach, UGA Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant assists the state in solving problems and realizing opportunities for its coastal environments and economy. As inland and coastal communities compete for natural resources and upland growth threatens the health of coastal marshes and estuaries, UGA Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant supports a balanced approach toward land use, economic development and ecosystem health.

Ponce City Market is excited to host a celebration that brings more awareness to the state’s sustainable seafood industry. Along with Georgia Aquarium, Ponce City Market is dedicated to supporting the local community and looking forward to an event where guests can enjoy some of the state’s best oysters while learning more about Georgia’s coast. Following the event, Ponce City Market visitors will be able to learn about the state’s oyster industry and its sustainability efforts at a special an exhibition located in The Plaza from Saturday, March 30 through Sunday, April 7.

Priced at $50, tickets to attend the PCM Oyster Social are now available for purchase here.

PONCE CITY MARKET HOSTS SPALDING NIX FINE ART POP-UP

Posted by Liz and John Attaway, 3/8/19

THROUGH MARCH 31ST AT PONCE CITY MARKET

FEATURING WORKS BY LANDON NORDEMAN, JERRY SIEGEL & SPENCER SLOAN
Located Between Ponce Denim Company & COCO + MISCHA

Ponce City Market, the mixed-use community hub in Atlanta’s Old Fourth Ward neighborhood, has teamed up with Spalding Nix Fine Art to host a photography pop-up gallery this month featuring works from renowned artists Landon Nordeman, Spencer Sloan and Jerry Siegel. Curated by local art expert and gallerist Spalding Nix of Spalding Nix Fine Art, the pop-up will be open through the end of March, and is located between Ponce Denim Company and COCO + MISCHA.
Looking for the eternal in the ephemeral, NYC-based Landon Nordeman is one of the world’s most sought-after fashion photographers. He has photographed events from the Oscars to the Met Gala, and his images have been featured in Vanity Fair, The New York Times, The New Yorker, National Geographic and many more. Though his photographs often appear staged, Nordeman pulls back the curtains to give viewers a look into backstage scenes where his subjects are shown in candid moments that are surreal and even surprising. His first monograph, “Out of Fashion,” was published by Damiani in 2016 and was named one of the best photo books of 2016 by TIME.

Jerry Siegel’s most recent body of work is titled “REVEAL” and celebrates Atlanta’s community of drag artists. He is a portrait and documentary photographer whose monograph “Black Belt Color,” features images from decades documenting his hometown of Selma, Alabama, and the surrounding area. These images set forth the unique cultural landscape of that area, known as the Black Belt. His photographs are in many private and corporate collections, including those of the Ogden Museum of Art, the Birmingham Museum of Art as well as eleven other Southeastern museums. Works from both “REVEAL” and “Black Belt Color” are on display at Ponce City Market.

Spencer Sloan is an Atlanta native whose background as a pop-culture blogger led to the creation of his most recent abstract work. For this show, Sloan has digitally manipulated paparazzi photographs into abstraction using a series of image-corrupting applications. Creating works that are large in scale and made with digital bursts of color, patterns and noise-induced shapes, Sloan’s experimentation results in distinctive photographs which reflect on the chaos that is pop culture. Most recently, Sloan completed a large-scale “digital noise” commission for Dolby’s headquarters in San Francisco.

“There is a thread that ties all three artists together – our obsession with celebrity culture,” says Nix. “Landon shows us new perspectives in the world of celebrities – often mysteriously hiding them in plain sight. The drag artists create the illusion of celebrity in intimate behind-the-scenes photographs by Jerry Siegel, and Spencer Sloan destroys paparazzi photos of celebrities to create something new, abstract and beautiful from annihilated celebrity candids. These artists don’t attack our obsession with celebrity culture, but encourage us to examine it in new ways.”

All works in the gallery are available for purchase.
