Celebrity Speakers and Event Highlights:

  • Carson Kressley and Thom Filicia from Bravo TV’s breakout show “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” and their current hit “Get a Room with Carson and Thom” team up to bring their unique brand of hilarity and considerable design talents to headline our Lecture Series. In two highly entertaining talk sessions, Carson and Thom offer their keen insights and advice on current design and lifestyle trends.
  • Putnam & Putnam are NYC’s preeminent floral designers for every occasion, from weddings to fashion presentations, and more. Darroch and Michael Putnam’s arrangements are sought for publication in Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Town & Country, Veranda, Dior, Cartier, and many other high-profile editorials. In addition, they offer flower workshops for savvy arrangers, their own product line, and retail sales at their recently-opened establishment in NYC’s Moxy Hotel, and have published their first book, Flower Color Guide, which they will be signing at the Show.
  • Bronson van Wyck is an international event designer and producer with a diverse and enviable client list. From Presidents Bush, Clinton, and Obama, celebrities Beyonce, Katy Perry and Uma Thurman, famous fashion designers and royalty, to the venerable brands of Hermes, Bulgari, Chanel, and several high-profile non-profits, Bronson is the go-to for the world’s most discerning patrons. Southern-raised and Yale educated, Bronson focuses on the age-old notions of hospitality, graciousness and generosity. He will be discussing and signing his new book, Born to Party, Forced to Work: 21st Century Hospitality.
  • Joseph P. Brady is a noted Atlanta silver historian, lecturer, author, and professional appraiser and consultant. He will present From Shop to Manufactory: American Silver and the Industrial Revolution.
  • Our wildly popular Iron Floral Competition returns as savvy arrangers go head-to-head to impress judges Putnam & Putnam in this annual feature of our Flower Festival.
  • Acclaimed architect Stan Dixon and renowned designer Jackye Lanham present their collaboration on her magnificent Kiawah Island home in their “Story of a House”

  • Cathedral Tour of Homes opens the doors to some of Atlanta’s most extraordinary private homes that showcase the finest in architecture, interior design, and timeless style. 5 exceptional homes throughout Buckhead and North Atlanta will be featured. Sunday

The Cathedral Antiques Show has raised more than $5 million for Atlanta-area nonprofits since its inception in 1969. An annual community outreach project sponsored by the Episcopal Church Women of the Cathedral of St. Philip, 100% of the net proceeds go to a different human services-based beneficiary each year.

PONCE CITY MARKET & WESTSIDE PROVISIONS DISTRICT TO BE AMONG ATLANTA DESIGN FESTIVAL’S 2019 FEATURED DESIGN DISTRICTS

From June 1-9, Community Destinations to Host Design Discussions, Workshops, a Live Podcast Taping & More

Ponce City Market and Westside Provisions District – both from Atlanta-based real estate investment and management company Jamestown – are partnering with Atlanta Design Festival (presented by MA! Design is Human) to serve as featured Design Districts during the 13th annual city-wide festival held from June 1-9, 2019. Furthering Jamestown’s design-forward approach to innovative development and mission to promote community involvement, the two community destinations will host design-related events, including book signings, design gatherings and classes, speaker sessions and more, throughout the nine-day festival.

Ponce City Market:

Design Week Book Fair at Posman Books (June 1-9, Normal Hours) – During the duration of Atlanta Design Festival, the family-owned, independent bookstore will be highlighting books that focus on all aspects of design. Looking for something specific? Come by to find a new source of inspiration.

‘Time to Dine: The Art of Restaurant Design’ Discussion with MODA (June 1, 2-4pm) – As part of the Food by Design series, Ponce City Market and Museum of Design Atlanta (MODA) are bringing together some of the city’s top restaurant designers for a rapid-fire discussion, in conjunction with Atlanta Design Festival. Moderated by Doug Henderson, Co-owner of Switch Modern, the free event will take place at The Plaza at Ponce City Market and feature panelists from some of Atlanta’s leading restaurant design firms, who will talk about the role of design in creating an environment that enables and enhances the dining experience. Panelists will include John Bencich of Square Feet Studio, Smith Hanes of Smith Hanes Studio, Dan Maas of ai3, Skylar Morgan of Skylar Morgan Furniture + Design and Tim Nichols of NO Architecture. After the discussion, attendees will be invited to visit restaurants designed by panelists and housed within Ponce City Market’s Central Food Hall. Please see here to register and learn more.

‘Sew Happy Color with Katie Kortman’ Class at Topstitch (June 1, 10am-4pm) – Topstitch – Atlanta’s premiere sewing destination for the aspiring garment sewer – is hosting Katie Kortman, an accomplished artist, sewist, teacher and textile designer, to lead a wardrobe color theory lecture as well as a full-day workshop to design and paint fabric, which will then be used to sew the Topstitch Essential Top or Dress. Participation is $225 for the lecture and workshop, or $45 for the lecture only. Tickets can be purchased here.

Anthropologie Summer Entertaining Soiree (June 2, 11am-1pm) – Join Anthropologie’s Home Stylist Naila Long for an insider’s tour of Anthropologie’s rapidly growing home assortment and Design Center while enjoying sips and snacks. Guests will learn and experience how Anthropologie is a true destination for creating an inspirational space through expansive collections featuring custom furniture, artisanal styles and artist collaborations. ‘Sew Happy Color with Katie Kortman’ – Paint Your Clutch (June 2, 10am-2pm) – Katie Kortman is coming to Topstitch to show us all how to infuse color and happiness into our me-made wardrobe. An accomplished artist, sewist, teacher and textile designer, Katie is going to demonstrate designing and painting on a plain fabric ground. This is a two-part workshop whereby attendees will design and paint fabric and then use it to sew the Topstitch Essential Clutch. Participants will receive free admission to Katie’s Friday Night “Wardrobe Color Theory” event on May 31 before painting and sewing on Sunday, June 2. ‘How Designing a Podcast Works’ Discussion with Stuff Media (June 3, 6-8pm) – Building a story is a lot like building a house. Join podcast hosts and producers of iHeartMedia and HowStuffWorks as they explore the process of turning an idea into an award-winning show. The event will be held at The Plaza at Ponce City Market.

Gensler Experience Pop-Up (June 4-8) – Join Gensler – an integrated architecture, design, planning and consulting firm with global clients – at The Plaza at Ponce City Market for an immersive experience exploring the minds of designers and the inspiration behind the places where we live, work and play. From galleries and pop-ups to panel discussions and podcasts, learn how Gensler is shaping the future of cities, in Atlanta and beyond. The community will be able to share ideas and think differently about design throughout the experience open all week long during Atlanta Design Festival. ‘Plating 101: The Principles of Perfect Culinary Plate’ Presentation at Williams Sonoma (June 4, 6-8pm) – The perfect plating presentation is the foundation of culinary decadence. Williams Sonoma at Ponce City Market is hosting a plating technique class with local Atlanta Chef Alexander Blackman, aka “The Bearded Chef,” to teach attendees the 101s of plating. Tickets ($10 General Admission; $35 VIP) can be purchased here. VIP guests will be gifted a de Buyers Round Mold set, and all participants will receive 10 percent off purchases the night of the class.

Design Talks: Pauline Wiersema (June 4, 6-8pm) – Held at General Assembly, the Design Talk features Pauline Wiersema and is free and open to the public. Pauline, founder of Wiersema! and cum laude graduate from the Design Academy Eindhoven (2018), is an interdisciplinary designer, specialized in making campaigns in combination with interactive installations and experiences. With A Fool Around she gives lectures and acts as a creative tutor to help companies and institutions ‘fool up’ their game. She does illustrative work for newspapers, magazines and digital platforms aimed at informing their audience. Attendees can register for the event here.

‘Understanding The New Rules of Luxury: A Living Room Discussion’ at Cobbler Union (June 5, 2:30-3:30pm) – Cobbler Union Founder Daniel Porcelli and Director of Marketing Sara Kuykendall will discuss the seismic shifts currently underway in the luxury retail space forcing brands to adapt to rapidly-changing consumer behavior and market dynamics. Located at the bespoke shoemaking company’s flagship store at Ponce City Market, the discussion is free and open to the public, and attendees can RSVP here.

UX Design & Data Science Talent Showcase (June 5, 5-7pm) – Interested in hiring or mentoring tech talent? Curious to learn how General Assembly is supporting tech sector growth in Atlanta and view GA’s graduate portfolios and capstone projects? Come enjoy some refreshments and mingle while you discover your next potential team member at this exclusive event. General Assembly welcomes hiring managers, recruiters and anyone hiring Data Scientists or User Experience (UX) Designers to meet expert-trained, job-ready candidates. Think of this as a reverse career fair, where you can see students’ final projects and talk individually with them. Plant(care) 101 Workshop at The Victorian at Citizen Supply (June 5, 7-9pm) – Those looking to spruce up their space with a houseplant can dive into the basics of plant care at The Victorian’s workshop covering tips on repotting, soil types, light levels, watering, propagation and more. Attendees can attend the workshop for $15, and the Victorian’s team will walk everyone through how to properly repot a plant using one of their handmade soil mixes. For those who want a hands-on experience, they can purchase a plant and a planter to repot in the class before taking it home. Tickets can be purchased here (password: plantcare).

Design Talks: Ingrid Van der Wacht, MALL, Gehl Architects and Dashel Helmets (June 6, 6-9pm) – Join General Assembly for a Design Talk featuring Ingrid Van der Wacht, Jennifer Bonner of MALL, Matthew Lister of Gehl Architects and Catherine Bedford Dashel Helmets. ‘The Design of the Summer Cocktail’ Workshop at Citizen Supply’s Likewise (June 7, 6-9pm) – Likewise’s Bar Director Ben Richardson (of Cocktail Commons and Staplehouse) will walk attendees through the design, pours and shakes behind a few favorite, refreshing summer drinks. Participants will learn the ins and outs, whys and hows of crafting top-notch cocktails while sipping creations and make a few new friends. Tickets ($18) are available here.

‘Sourdough 101’ Class at Root Baking Co. (June 7, 6-9pm) – Root Baking Co’s hands-on lesson is designed to teach beginners how to bake at home with a sourdough starter, covering how to train up a lively starter from scratch, how to mix, ferment, shape and bake a loaf, and how to best utilize home ovens to produce crusty results. Root will provide drinks and snacks from their kitchen, and guests will take home a fresh sourdough loaf, active starter, freshly-milled whole wheat flour, an info packet and a replicable formula. ‘Charcuterie 101: The Perfect Party Platter’ Class at Williams Sonoma (June 7, 6-8pm) – Williams Sonoma at Ponce City Market is hosting a charcuterie 101 class to teach participants how to design the perfect party platter. Learn how to select the proper size board, what items to include and how to assemble a masterpiece charcuterie board. General Admission tickets are $25 and include a Williams Sonoma Open Kitchen Acacia Board; VIP tickets are $50 and include a Premium Olivewood Board. ‘The Shape of the A: Designing Tomorrow’s Atlanta Today’ Discussion (June 8, 5-7:30pm) – Quick Quick invites Atlanta’s creatives and entrepreneurs to attend conversation among leaders imagining and crafting the city’s future. Free and open to the public, the panel will feature voices from the worlds of fashion, advertising and branding, retail, architecture and of course, print. Snacks and drinks will be available. ‘Ridiculous History’ Live Podcast Recording with Stuff Media (June 8, 3-5pm) – History is beautiful, brutal and often, ridiculous. Ridiculous History hosts Ben Bowlin and Noel Brown dive deep into some of the most bizarre stories of people, places and events throughout the span of human civilization, and they’re joining up with Atlanta Design Festival to create a special live episode of the podcast. The public is invited to join the guys at General Assembly as they explore the strange story of Ponce City Market’s first life as a Sears headquarters during this special episode. Ridiculous History is from Stuff Media – the world’s leading for-profit publisher of podcasts – whose headquarters are located at Ponce City Market.

Westside Provisions District:

Lee Ledbetter Book Signing at Hudson Grace (June 3, 5-7pm) – The preeminent purveyor of timeless décor, Hudson Grace, is hosting a book signing in their Westside Provisions District space on Monday, June 3 from 5pm to 7pm with New Orleans architect and designer Lee Ledbetter. Lee will be in the space to mingle amongst cocktails and sign copies of his new book, The Art of Place: Architecture and Interiors. Room & Board Presents Developing Atlanta: Thoughtful Development for a Sustainable Future (June 4, 5:30-7pm) – Join Room & Board for a panel discussion presented by CityLab where they will discuss Atlanta’s development, the economic impact of thoughtful design on communities and sustainability and what Atlanta is doing right and wrong. Moderated by Mark Byrnes, Senior Associate Editor at CityLab, the panel will feature Tim Keane, Commissioner, Planning and Community Development, City of Atlanta, Georgia; Kristi Rooks, Founder, Thoughtwell; and Nathan Hedges, Director of Development for Atlanta, The Allen Morris Co. The event is free and open to the public.

Peg Risom Presents The Block Island Collection at Design Within Reach (June 5, 10am-12pm) – Design Within Reach is celebrating an exciting new design from midcentury Danish master Jens Risom: The Block Island Outdoor Collection. In 1967, Risom built his family’s vacation home on Block Island, Rhode Island. For a secluded walking trail that ran adjacent to the property, he drew plans for outdoor furniture meant to provide a place for passersby to rest and enjoy their surroundings, a labor of love for his neighbors, which fell by the wayside until Risom died at age 100 in 2016. Design Within Reach is honored to bring the Block Island Collection to life as an homage to Risom and the setting that inspired him. Join DWR – along with Jens’ daughter Peg Risom – to celebrate the Block Island Collection and Risom’s legacy as a pioneer in introducing Danish modern furniture to the United States. CEU at Design Within Reach: Technology and Design in Natural Stone (June 6, 12-1:30pm) – Design Within Reach is hosting continuing education seminar “Technology and Design in Natural Stone,” led by Alison Mullins, Brand Ambassador with decorative natural stone company Antolini Italy. This intermediate-level CEU course will update architects and designers on the latest developments in the natural stone industry, with an eye toward meeting design goals – including new finishes, advances in stone fabrication, best practices in sustainability and a review of award-winning projects using natural stone.
