CULTURED SOUTH’S ATLANTA FERMENTATION FEST 2018

Posted by Liz and John Attaway, 5/6/18

From the Makers of Golda Kombucha, Cultured South is Located at Lee + White on the Atlanta BeltLine’s Westside Trail

Grand Opening Will Be Hosted In Conjunction with 2nd Annual Atlanta Fermentation Fest

Tickets Available HERE

On Sunday, May 20th, Cultured South, a fermentation company from Melanie Wade of Golda Kombucha, will open its much-anticipated kombucha taproom and fermentation marketplace on the Atlanta BeltLine’s Westside Trail. Cultured South will offer fermented foods and beverages––including kombucha tea, kefir, Jun, drinking vinegars, wild ferments, cold brew coffee, vegan cheeses and other probiotic-rich offerings––to taste and take home. The warehouse space is in the new Lee + White food and beverage district at 1038 White Street.

Launched by Melanie Wade in 2013, Golda Kombucha is Georgia’s “first and finest kombucha company” that helped pioneer the popularity of kombucha in the state. This year, Melanie founded Cultured South as the parent company encompassing Golda Kombucha, Pure Abundance Cashew Cheese and other forthcoming probiotic-rich, fermented fare. The first-of-its-kind in Georgia and one of only a few kombucha taprooms in the Southeast, Cultured South will offer fermented foods from its own line along with goods from other like-minded businesses. The space will also serve as home to educational classes about health and fermentation and will offer hangout-friendly seating along the Beltline.

In conjunction with the grand opening of Cultured South, the company will host the 2nd annual Atlanta Fermentation Fest on Sunday, May 20th from noon to 6pm at Lee + White. The festival was created last year to grow awareness about fermentation and educate the community about the history and health benefits of traditional fermented foods.

Attendees can expect fermented products from around two dozen local and regional producers, educational science demonstrations, seasonal kombucha on tap, kombucha mocktails, live music and much more. At-home fermentation pros are encouraged to bring their own cultures  for a ‘culture swap,’ and all guests can enjoy bites from food truck Alkaline Junkie––a mobile wellness cafe, and other fermented foods and drinks including chocolate, coffee, vegan cheeses, beer, cider, honey, sourdough crackers and breads, and more.

Proceeds from Atlanta Fermentation Fest will be donated to Community Farmers Markets, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the growth and sustainability of a diverse local food culture. CFM will also host a DIY fermentation station during the event. General admission tickets are now available for $10 online here (kids under 15 may attend for free with an adult). Libation Glass Passes can be purchased for $15 and include a souvenir ATLFF tasting glass and five tasting tickets redeemable from any beverage exhibitor at the festival.

About Cultured South Fermentation Co.

Atlanta’s first marketplace for healthy, living foods made in the South, Cultured South was founded in 2018 by kombucha and fermentation expert Melanie Wade. The company encompasses Golda Kombucha, Pure Abundance Cashew Cheese, and other fermented food and drink. Set to open on May 20, 2018, Cultured South’s brick-and-mortar taproom will be located in the city’s historic West End neighborhood in the Lee + White food and beverage district. The space will feature a kombucha tasting room, development kitchen, marketplace for fermented foods, and more.

About Golda Kombucha

Founded in 2013, Golda Kombucha is Georgia’s first and finest sparkling kombucha tea. The company is more than a business venture for founder Melanie Wade–-it’s her family heritage. Golda Kombucha’s core recipe and fermentation culture were passed down from Melanie’s 96-year-old grandmother Golda, a living testament to wellness who was born in the Blue Ridge Mountains and has been perfecting her unique kombucha recipe for over four decades. After experimenting with fruit and herb flavor profiles in her home kitchen, founder Melanie Wade debuted Golda Kombucha to the public at local farmers’ markets and craft fairs around Georgia. She found that Atlantans couldn’t get enough of her time-tested family recipe. Today, the smooth, earthy oak-aged teas are available on tap, in ready-to-drink bottles, and in growlers at dozens of restaurants, bars, and grocers throughout the Southeast, including Kroger, Whole Foods Markets, Central Market stores, and over 100 small stockists.

Not the typical Festival tasting experience, the AF&WF Tasting Tents are an all-you-can-indulge experience that allows guests the opportunity to eat, drink and explore the region’s top food and drink products and chef creations while also celebrating the international influences that have shaped our region. Piedmont Park’s Greensward Promenade will once again provide the perfect backdrop for the Tasting Tents, which will take place during the evening on Friday, June 1 and Saturday, June 2 and in the afternoon on Sunday, June 3.

The 2018 Tasting Tents will include 94 food and beverage exhibitor booths featuring 27 food producers, 70 wine brands, 80 spirit brands, and 64 beer brands and a rotating line-up of 35 different chefs each day. Highlights of the Tents include a cocktail garden, a Connoisseur Tent, and a newly added Southern Marketplace featuring favorite artisan goods and housewares. Some of the themes for this year’s Tents include Improbable Pairs, an exploration of unexpected wine, beer, cocktail and food pairings; Palate Pleasers, a flavor-driven sampling experience; and Ingredient Spotlight, a showcase of the region’s quintessential ingredients.  The Tents will also feature Wine Riot, a sister event to the Festival that will debut in Atlanta this fall.

“We have as much fun creating the Tasting Tent experience as the guests do indulging their way through it,” said Festival CoFounder Elizabeth Feichter. “It is so exciting to see the region’s best talent come together to curate such a memorable event for Festival-goers.”

The 2018 Tasting Tents are scheduled from 7:30 – 10:30 pm on Friday, June 1 and from 6:30 – 9:30 pm on Saturday, June 2. Sunday’s Tasting Tent session will round out the weekend from 1:30 – 4:30 pm on June 3.
