Race raises funds to empower people with disabilities and transform child literacy

The Spark 5K, presented by Roark, is back for its third annual event, bringing energy, excitement, and impact to Piedmont Park on Thursday, May 8 at 6:30 p.m. ET. More than just a race, this growing tradition fuels meaningful change, supporting two transformative foundations in The Kyle Pease Foundation and Malcolm Mitchell’s Share the Magic Foundation.

The Spark 5K continues its tradition as a dynamic corporate challenge, rallying Atlanta-based companies to step up, show their team spirit, and make a lasting difference in our community. Businesses of all sizes are encouraged to join forces, register their teams at Spark5K.com, and compete for awards recognizing the most spirited, creative, and engaged groups. It’s not just about the run, but about showing up as a team and making an impact.

Race beneficiaries, The Kyle Pease Foundation continues to champion opportunities for inclusion, ensuring in-chair athletes have a place in sports while working to enhance the lives of individuals with disabilities, while Share the Magic Foundation remains dedicated to changing lives through literacy, bringing joy and educational empowerment to children facing challenges.

“The Spark 5K is an incredible event that embodies the values of inclusion, teamwork, and perseverance, and we’re excited to be part of the third edition,” said Kyle Pease, Founder and Chief Inspirational Officer of The Kyle Pease Foundation. “Seeing our athletes cross the finish line alongside corporate teams and other participants is a testament to what’s possible when a community unites for a shared purpose.”

Atlanta’s own Kyle Pease and Malcolm Mitchell, along with other local athletes and corporate representatives, will be on hand to celebrate the event. All registered participants will enjoy premium giveaways, including a Spark 5K branded race tee, while winners of each category will be given prizes for their achievement. Post-race festivities will also feature delicious offerings from Auntie Anne’s, and refreshing beverages from Jamba.

“The Spark 5K is much more than just a race, offering an opportunity for the community to come together and spark the change we all want to see,” said Malcom Mitchell, Founder and CEO of Share the Magic Foundation. “By coming together with Roark for this remarkable event, we create a ripple effect that empowers young minds and fosters a love of learning.”

With each step taken, participants, corporate teams, and the broader Atlanta community fuel a movement of compassion and empowerment. Don’t miss your chance to be part of this inspiring event. Sign up today at Spark5K.com, and we’ll see you at the starting line on Thursday, May 8 at 6:30 p.m. ET!

“Roark’s mission is to help people and companies reach their full potential, and we make sure this comes through in everything we do, including our social impact initiatives,” said Allison Hill, Head of Diversity & Social Responsibility at Roark. “We look forward to seeing the Atlanta business community come together for a night of camaraderie, fun, and purpose, and a little friendly competition.”

HORIZON THEATRE PRESENTS JENNIFER BLACKMER’S I CAN CARRY YOUR HEART WITH ME – MARCH 14 TO APRIL 5

Posted by Liz and John Attaway, 3/10/25

Southeastern premiere of tour-de-force play starring Atlanta-favorite Carolyn Cook

Horizon Theatre Company continues its spectacular 40th season with the Southeastern premiere of the winner of the prestigious 2024 Steinberg/ATCA New Play Citation play I Carry Your Heart With Me, running March 14 – April 5 (press opening March 21). Esther, a stenographer inside a top-secret Vietnam-era debriefing room, has a picture-perfect world until she encounters an airman whose story quite literally changes her life. As she captures the stories of non-coms and POWs freshly back from the front lines, Esther finds herself smack dab in the middle of a troubling investigation. With plenty of twists and turns along the way, this tour-de-force starring renowned Atlanta actor Carolyn Cook is a taut, suspenseful mystery that packs a real emotional wallop.

“This play is an extraordinary story of a formative year in one woman’s life and how it profoundly shapes her future,” says Carolyn Cook. “Esther’s journey is one of both discovery and reckoning, and I’m honored to bring her story to life for Atlanta audiences. I hope they will find themselves as captivated as I was when I first read the script and could not put it down.”

In this solo play by Jennifer Blackmer, Carolyn Cook (Suzi Award for Best Actress for Horizon’s Time Stands Still, and Best Supporting Actress for Citizens Market, also Horizon’s solo show The Syringa Tree) commands the stage as Esther Shannon, looking back on her formative time in her early 20s as a government stenographer for the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. Raised in a military family, Esther is now the new girl and best typist on the base, where she meets attractive officer Andy, who wines and dines her. Like her mother and grandmother before her, she seems destined to become a military wife and mother. Longing to make her father proud and to make a bigger difference, she thinks about taking her skills to Vietnam instead. Andy persuades her to stay stateside by pulling strings to get her a top-security clearance job on the base. Tasked with transcribing debriefings of POWs and non-coms returning from the front lines, she records their fractured memories of the war which seep into her and change her perspective on the world. Then Esther encounters a POW helicopter pilot whose story has a deep impact on her, ultimately causing a clash with her official duties and complicating her life. As she becomes entangled in an investigation, Esther grapples with her future in a suspenseful and emotionally charged journey.

A blend of fact and fiction, the play is inspired by playwright Jennifer Blackmer’s mother’s real-life experiences as a young stenographer with a similar job on the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base during the Vietnam War. Blackmer’s mother revealed some of her experiences to her daughter before she passed away suddenly in her early 60s, leaving the playwright to put together the pieces and imagine the rest of her story. Jennifer Blackmer’s plays have been produced Off-Broadway and across the country, and she serves as Professor of Theatre and Executive Director of the Virginia B. Ball Center for Creative Inquiry at Ball State University. Blackmer was in residence at Horizon in 2023 as one of the lead mentors in Horizon’s New South Young Playwrights Festival.

Directed by Horizon Theatre’s Co-Artistic Director Lisa Adler, the production reunites her with one of her favorite collaborators, the talented Carolyn Cook. Adler has directed Cook in many productions over the past three decades, including her acclaimed performance in the solo play The Syringa Tree, which played at Horizon and toured venues in the Southeast, as well as her award-winning performances in Time Stands Still and Skylight. The world of the play is created with an evocative, poetic set by resident designers Isabel and Moriah Curley-Clay, shaped by lights from resident lighting designer Mary Parker and supported by projections from Victoria Nation (Horizon’s Amelie and Madeline’s Christmas) with sound by Whitney Leonard.

Performances begin March 14, with a press opening on March 21. Performances are Thursday and Friday at 8 p.m., Saturday at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. and Sunday at 5 p.m., with special Wednesday performances on March 19 at 8 p.m. and March 26 and April 2 at 2 p.m. Tickets start at $30 on Wednesdays and Thursdays and $35 for Friday nights, Saturday nights and weekend matinees. Prices rise as performances fill up, so patrons are encouraged to order early for the best prices and availability. Students under 25 can get $20 tickets with valid student ID by calling the box office or purchase in person before show time if seats are available. Single ticket seating is general admission, with a reserved seating section for season subscribers. There is limited accessible seating for those needing mobility accommodations, and it must be reserved by phone. For tickets and more information, visit horizontheatre.com or call the Box Office at 404.584.7450.

THE AVENUE PEACHTREE CITY CELEBRATES SPRING’S ARRIVAL WITH FIRST-EVER BLOOM CAMPAIGN: A MONTH FILLED WITH ENVIRONMENTALLY CONSCIOUS, COMMUNITY-FRIENDLY FUN

Posted by Liz and John Attaway, 3/10/25

Throughout BLOOM’s month of fun, the Peachtree City community can engage in eco-friendly activities and positively impact the environment by supporting local organizations

The Avenue Peachtree City is proud to present BLOOM, a month-long series of events and activities aimed to inspire sustainable practices and celebrate the start of spring. Set to run from March 23 to April 22, BLOOM will transform The Avenue Peachtree City into a prime location for eco-friendly events and activities.

“BLOOM offers attendees a rich blend of family-friendly fun with a meaningful message,” says Johnathan Andrews, general manager at The Avenue Peachtree City. “As the need to take care of our planet grows more and more important, we hope that BLOOM not only exposes the surrounding Peachtree City community to environmentally responsible practices but also to local organizations they can support in making a lasting impact.”

BLOOM is designed to inspire visitors to embrace sustainable living practices while building a stronger sense of community and promoting fresh beginnings. BLOOM will feature a diverse range of exciting activities for people of all ages, including:

World Water Day – On Saturday, March 22 from 1 to 3 p.m., The Avenue Peachtree City will host a World Water Day celebration featuring a children’s activity table water experiments. These activities will be provided with the help of the Flint Riverkeeper, an organization that works to maintain and protect the quality and flow of the Flint River and its tributaries. The Avenue Peachtree City will also launch a fundraiser on its Facebook page, allowing attendees to support the organization’s efforts through donations. Apart from these activities, the Avenue will giveaway 200 water bottles, while supplies last.

Spring Festival – On Friday, April 18 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., The Avenue Peachtree City will host its Spring Festival at Central Park, featuring face painting, Bunny photos and an egg scavenger hunt with over 10,000 eggs provided by The Church of the King. Additional children’s activities will also be available at the Spring Festival courtesy of the Southern Conservation Trust, offering areas for families to take part in a butterfly craft along with stuffy adoptions, where kids can “adopt” a plush friend to take home.

Arts & Crafts Market –The Avenue Peachtree City will host an Arts & Crafts Market on Tuesday, April 22 from 3:00 to 7:30 p.m. The event will feature artists and crafters from the Newnan-Coweta Art Association, a non-profit organization that fosters art education and the appreciation of art, encouraging artists to produce original works of art and more.

Earth Day Celebration – On Tuesday, April 22 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., The Avenue Peachtree City will cap off BLOOM at Central Park with activities that celebrate our planet. As part of the celebration, visitors can learn about animals from AWARE Wild Life Center, a wildlife center dedicated to rehabilitating injured and orphaned native Georgia wild animals and educating the public on peacefully coexisting with wildlife. The event will also feature several children’s activities provided by the Southern Conservation Trust, including a ‘Planting for the Planet’ activity where guests can plant and take home wildflowers to help support pollinators.

During its Spring Festival and Earth Day celebrations, visitors of The Avenue Peachtree City will also be able to learn more about Southern Conservation Trust and the Fayette Environmental Education Center, chat with their teams and explore exciting activities at their booths.
