JAY SOM COMING TO ATLANTA’S AISLE 5 ON DEC 5

Posted by Liz and John Attaway, 11/9/25

Los Angeles-based / Bay area- raised multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and producer Melina Duterte aka Jay Som recently released the critically acclaimed Belong – her first new album in over six years. The record has received praise from NPRThe New York TimesBillboard, Rolling Stone, Stereogum, The Needle Drop, Alternative Press and Paste Magazine, calling it “one of Jay Som’s strongest works of late.” Next month, she will be heading on tour, playing at Aisle 5 on 12/5.

Early praise for Jay Som & Belong:

“Indie’s secret weapon” – Rolling Stone

“Duterte’s third album, ‘Belong,’ has both pillowy guitar textures and plenty of bite.”

The New York Times

“Come for the gauzy songwriting, stay for the hooks stuck in your head” – Pitchfork

the full thrush of this is very much pop-punk catharsis..the eruption of it, it’s just so satisfying”

 – NPR Music

“a startling, spectacular return…’Float’ is one of the most purely pleasurable rock songs in recent memory.” – Stereogum

“a tender electro-pop track featuring textured synths, piano, and dreamy vocals. The evolving soundscape feels effortless and vibrant”

Paste

“’Belong’ is an expansion of her once nascent talents, a rush of electro-synths, punk-pop and other variously nostalgic indie genres, presented in a new way.” – Associated Press

“While she indulges in a bit of nostalgia, this is no aughts radio rock pastiche; her sound remains refreshingly her own”

 – them

“‘Float’ feels like an organic collaboration mixing Jay Som’s dream pop sensibilities with Adkins’ signature sound” – Consequence

“a truly excellent electro-pop track…with some of her best vocals to date.”

 – Billboard

“Even on her most collaborative release yet, Duterte’s individual vision has never been stronger or clearer.” – Brooklyn Vegan

“another triumph” – Interview Magazine

“…the production and attention to the tiniest details throughout Belong show a new level of artistry.” – PopMatters

Jay Som – the project of Los Angeles-based multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and producer Melina Duterte – just released Belong, her first new album in over six years. Belong features Jay Som’s first-ever collaborations and today she shares a music video for one of the album’s biggest moments – “Past Lives” featuring Hayley Williams of Paramore.

Studio Sparks (Cristiana Figueiredo & Lucas Moreira) who directed the video note:

“We wanted the animation to reflect the journey of personal discovery that the song represents.

We imagined a tiny, music-box-sized character who escapes into a vast frozen world, haunted by shadowy reflections of her past self as she travels through melting cliffs, falling stars, and cracking ice — a fragmented narrative mirroring her emotions and confusions through surreal sequences. Caught between collapse and transformation, she spirals upward through abstract scenes of memory and feeling, ultimately reconnecting with all the lives that live within her.”

Watch Jay Som spiraling up in the mesmerizing animated video HERE

Jay Som will embark on her first North American tour in over 5 years this winter, but first she’ll return to the EU/UK starting this weekend. See below to find a show near you, and get your tickets HERE.

Since Jay Som’s critically acclaimed sophomore album Anak Ko came out in 2019, Duterte has spent the last few years cultivating her passion for production and audio engineering. This lead to producing credits on the GRAMMY-winning boygenius album the record, Lucy Dacus’ latest Forever Is A Feeling, and countless beloved indie records. She also joined boygenius as a touring band member, collaborated alongside the likes of Troye Sivan and beabadoobee with No Rome, contributed to the I Saw the TV Glow soundtrack, and more. Yes, Jay Som itself has been on a bit of a break; Duterte, however, has perhaps been busier than ever.

Finally, Jay Som returns with Belong. While Jay Som has always been a solo project for Duterte, this album finds her expanding her world by collaborating with outside musicians, writers and producers. Duterte wrote, composed, performed, produced, engineered and mixed the record with contributions from Joao Gonzalez (of Soft Glas), Mal Hauser (a collaborator to Mk.gee and Illuminati Hotties), Steph Marziano (producer for Vundabar, Hot Wax, Sir Chloe) and Kyle Pulley, and she also welcomed guest vocalists for the first time. The album finds Duterte searching for her place, or somewhere she belongs, within an indie rock ecosystem that Jay Som stepped away from for the past six years. The result is an album unlike any Jay Som record before it: a gripping 11-song set about self-definition that floats between supercharged power-pop hits and hazy ballads, between electronic curiosities and lighters-up anthems.

HAYDEN PEDIGO PLAYS ATLANTA’S MASQUERADE ALTAR ON DEC 3RD

Posted by Liz and John Attaway, 11/9/25

Texas-born and Oklahoma City-based fingerstyle guitarist Hayden Pedigo released his remarkable and genre-defying new album I’ll Be Waving As You Drive Away earlier this year via Mexican Summer, which Pitchfork named as Best New Music. He’s now gearing up for his headline tour and will play Masquerade (Altar) in Atlanta on 12/3.

“warm, patient and uplifting” – THE NEW YORK TIMES

“Brilliant” – NPR MUSIC

“We’re lucky that Hayden Pedigo stumbled upon the footsteps of John Fahey and followed them into the deep wordless wood.” – GILLIAN WELCH

“Refined compositional craft and well-executed technique” – PREMIER GUITAR

“studious and inventive…an honesty and understanding of self here that feels refreshing, especially amid so much fingerstyle traditionalism.” – PITCHFORK

“The list of human beings who have conjured this much beauty from steel strings and some wood is short, and Pedigo is on it.” – BANDCAMP

“one of the world’s best guitarists” – PASTE

“[Pedigo] redefines the term “renaissance person.”” – STEREOGUM

Texas-born and Oklahoma City-based fingerstyle guitarist Hayden Pedigo announces his remarkable and genre-defying new album I’ll Be Waving As You Drive Away, out June 6th via Mexican Summer. Since the release of his 2023 record, The Happiest Times I Ever Ignored, Pedigo earned widespread critical acclaim, performed a stunning NPR Tiny Desk Concert, toured non-stop with the likes of Jenny Lewis, Devendra Banhart and Hiss Golden Messenger, and more. He then decamped on a 20,000-acre ranch at an artist residency in Wyoming to write his new album, which he’d later record in Ojai with Scott Hirsch and name for a “pretty devastating” episode of Little House on the Prairie from 1978. The resulting album, I’ll Be Waving As You Drive Away, is the final installment of what Pedigo has dubbed ‘The Motor Trilogy’ – his three latest solo albums, tied together by their vehicular Jonathan Phillips artwork. An innovator of the instrumental genre, challenger of the stereotypical, and son of a truck-stop preacher, Pedigo has crafted an intentionally maximalist, genre-resistant work of warped instrumental Americana on this release, which he calls “a micro-dose psychedelic album…as if somebody had cut up a tab of LSD and put on a Fahey record.”

Out today is the album opener, “Long Pond Lily.” An outsized and fragrant bloom of intent; a simultaneous echo of Hayden’s previous work and a big, blousy departure. “It’s very heavy and huge” he says of the song, “the low end is rattling on it — it sounds bonkers, and feels like it’s on the verge of going off the rails. It’s so maximalist, so much more energetic than anything I’ve ever written.” Accompanied by a cinematic music video by Matt Muir that manages to make opening a small-town scaregrounds feel like the American Dream, “Long Pond Lily” is out now HERE

The two-day event will feature a wide range of food vendors serving authentic halal cuisine, an artisan market with various types of goods, and plenty of family fun, including a dedicated kids’ zone.

The Atlanta Halal Fall Festival is hosted by the Atlanta Muslim Festival Collective, an organization dedicated to hosting events that bring Muslims and non-Muslims together to celebrate the richness of Muslim culture and identity. Everyone is welcome and invited to learn more about, participate in, and enjoy the cultural elements showcased at AMFC events, which also include the Atlanta Ramadan Food Festival, which took place in March of this year, and Atlanta’s first official halal food festival, the Atlanta Summer Halal Food Festival that was at Atlantic Station.

“We’re incredibly excited to introduce the Atlanta Halal Fall Festival to the city, especially after the overwhelming positive response we received from our previous events this year,” said Hasnain Lakhani, Co-Founder of AMFC, Atlanta restaurateur, and entrepreneur. “It’s truly a passion for our team to continue bringing authentic cultural experiences to the city, and with tons of delicious food options, retail vendors, and family activities, we’ve made sure the Atlanta Halal Fall Festival will be an unforgettable event for all who attend.”

This year, admission to the 2025 Fall Festival is completely free to the public in the spirit of giving, providing a fun space for community gathering and the opportunity for attendees to purchase clothing, jewelry, fragrances, and other gifts from the festival’s artisan market vendors, especially with holidays like Thanksgiving and shopping holidays like Black Friday taking place only a few days after the festival.

“As we round out the year, we really wanted to give back with not only a wonderful event for the community to connect and gather,” said Lakhani. “We really wanted to spotlight our artist market and vendors as they move into the holiday season and traditional festivals wrap up for the season.”

Over 50 food vendors will offer dishes from across the Middle East and beyond at the Atlanta Fall Halal Festival, allowing guests to explore a rich mix of global cuisines. Returning vendor favorites from the Atlanta Summer Halal Festival include Yemini coffee shop 967 Coffee Co., Pakistani cuisine-centered Khaana By Saima, Indonesian restaurant Dragon Delite, Uzbekistani eatery Laghman Express, and Mediterranean restaurant Shawarma Factory. New local picks include Jay’s Deli, Ponko Chicken, and Yaba’s Bagels. From sizzling kabobs and savory rice dishes to indulgent desserts, fresh baked goods, and refreshing drinks, all cuisine served at the Atlanta Halal Fall Festival will be prepared in accordance with halal values, meaning made with care, integrity, and respect for halal dietary values. With its bold flavors and wide variety, halal cuisine offers something for every palate, from comforting, familiar favorites to exciting new dishes waiting to be discovered.

Along with an exciting mix of delicious dishes, the festival will offer complimentary water, live entertainment featuring Atlanta performers and cultural acts, a dedicated kids’ zone, and a vibrant artisan market featuring art, clothing, fragrance, and jewelry merchants, along with handmade goods from local businesses. The festival’s convenient Grant Park location also makes it easy for families and other attendees to visit Zoo Atlanta before or after the event.

DAVID BYRNE IS ON TOUR AT THE FOX THEATRE ATLANTA – DEC 2 & 3

Posted by Liz and John Attaway, 11/5/25

DAVID BYRNE ANNOUNCES NEW ALBUM

AND WORLD TOUR

WHO IS THE SKY?

DUE SEPTEMBER 5 FROM MATADOR RECORDS

A COLLABORATION WITH PRODUCER KID HARPOON AND GHOST TRAIN ORCHESTRA

ALSO FEATURING HAYLEY WILLIAMS, ST. VINCENT AND TOM SKINNER

HEAR FIRST SINGLE “EVERYBODY LAUGHS

David Byrne is proud to announce Who Is the Sky?, his first new album since 2018’s acclaimed and award-winning American Utopia, which will be released September 5th by Matador Records. The album was produced by the Grammy-winning Kid Harpoon (Harry Styles, Miley Cyrus), while its 12 songs were arranged by the members of New York-based chamber ensemble Ghost Train Orchestra. Click here to pre-order the album, including a limited Cantaloupe Orange / Strawberry Pink split vinyl featuring a lenticular cover.

Musical friends old and new, including St. Vincent, Paramore’s Hayley Williams, The Smile drummer Tom Skinner and American Utopia percussionist Mauro Refosco, also make appearances on Who Is the Sky?, which is led by the infectious single “Everybody Laughs.”  Along with the song, Byrne has released its official video, directed by multimedia artist Gabriel Barcia-Colombo.

“Someone I know said, ‘David, you use the word “everybody” a lot.’ I suppose I do that to give an anthropological view of life in New York as we know it,” says Byrne. “Everybody lives, dies, laughs, cries, sleeps and stares at the ceiling. Everybody’s wearing everybody else’s shoes, which not everybody does, but I have done. I tried to sing about these things that could be seen as negative in a way balanced by an uplifting feeling from the groove and the melody, especially at the end, when St. Vincent and I are doing a lot of hollering and singing together. Music can do that – hold opposites simultaneously. I realized that when singing with Robyn earlier this year. Her songs are often sad, but the music is joyous.”

“It took me a second to realize, oh yeah, these songs are personal, but with David’s unique perspective on life in general,” adds Kid Harpoon (aka Tom Hull). “Walking around New York listening to the demo of ‘Everybody Laughs’ was so joyous, because it made me feel like we’re all the same – we all laugh, cry and sing. The thing about David that resonates with a lot of people is that he’s in on the joke. He gets the absurdity of it all, and all of these personal observations are his perspective on it.”

Byrne will also return to the road with a brand new live show in support of Who Is the Sky?. The touring band will comprise 13 musicians, singers and dancers, including members of the American Utopia band, all of whom will be mobile throughout the set. The North American tour begins in September, with Australia & New Zealand dates kicking off in January 2026 and European & United Kingdom dates starting the following month. Tickets go on sale Friday, June 13 and can be purchased HERE. Fans can sign up for the artist presale now through June 12th at 10:00 pm local HERE. The artist presale will begin Tuesday, June 10th 10:00am ET through Thursday, June 12th at 10:00pm local. See the full tour itinerary below.

In 2023, as his triumphant American Utopia era came to a close after morphing from an album and tour into an acclaimed Broadway show and then a Spike Lee-directed HBO film, Byrne began jotting down the occasional groove, chord or melody. It had been a minute.

During the tumultuous three prior years, “I did a LOT of cooking (Mexican and Indian mostly) and a LOT of drawing,” says Byrne, who also started compiling lyric ideas and phrases for possible songs. “I’ve found that when the time comes, it’s easier to start if there’s a little stockpile – and before too long there was. Very rudimentary songs began to emerge, with just me on acoustic guitar singing over a programmed loop or beat.”

And with the world, and the in-progress American Utopia Broadway run, on pause, he, like much of humanity, took the opportunity to ask, “Do I like what I’m doing? Why am I writing songs, or working this job, or whatever? Does any of it matter?”

Byrne’s attempts to answer those weighty questions can be found on Who Is The Sky?, which builds upon the optimistic themes laid out by American Utopia and its supporting tour, and more specifically spelled out by the Grammy-winning Broadway show and subsequent movie. With this offering, Byrne continues his lifelong exploration of human connection and the potential for societal unity against the chaotic backdrop of the world. Who Is the Sky? is particularly cinematic, humorous and joyful, but often with a lesson baked in – that love is unexplainable, that enlightenment means very different things to different people and that it’s always a good idea to moisturize, whether you wake up the next morning with skin like a baby or not. Most importantly, the songs evince Byrne’s gift for riding the razor’s edge of avant-garde and accessible pop.

Byrne was inspired to enlist Ghost Train Orchestra for the album after hearing their 2023 tribute album to the blind New York composer and street poet Moondog, and later that year jumped on stage with the group during a Brooklyn performance. Enticed by the 15-member Ghost Train’s varied instrumental lineup – which includes drums, percussion, guitar and bass along with strings, winds and brass – he thought to himself, “what if that’s what these new songs of mine sounded like?” Byrne asked if they’d want to serve as his band for the Who Is The Sky? sessions, and they quickly agreed.

“David sent me some demos and asked us to put together some orchestral ideas,” says Ghost Train Orchestra leader Brian Carpenter. “Curtis Hasselbring and I quickly wrote a couple rough draft arrangements of his songs for Ghost Train, including ‘My Apartment Is My Friend,’ which was the first song we rehearsed at our tiny rehearsal space in Chinatown. To hear him singing with us for the first time on that song was just incredible.”

Via an introduction at a party by a friend, Kid Harpoon came into the picture next. “Sometimes things do happen at parties,” Byrne notes. “I knew this could all get complicated and I also wanted to be sure the recordings sounded as good as possible. An outside set of ears can be super helpful. A few artists I knew had worked with Kid Harpoon, and I thought those records sounded really good.” Byrne sent Harpoon some demos, and after a discussion at the former’s Santa Monica hotel, he jumped aboard too.

There are “more story songs than usual” on Who Is the Sky?, according to Byrne. These “mini-narratives based on personal experience” include “She Explains Things to Me” (sample lyric: “how come it’s all so obvious to her?”), “A Door Called No” (which magically opens after Byrne receives a kiss), “My Apartment Is My Friend” (“you’ve seen me at my very worst / but we always get along,” he sings) and “I Met the Buddha at a Downtown Party” (at which the onetime spiritual guru is more interested in the unhealthy deserts than deification).

Marked by the inviting vocal interplay between Byrne and Paramore’s Williams, the jaunty “What Is the Reason for It?” aims to codify love in a way logic can rarely accomplish (“does it do something useful? / nobody understands it”), while “The Avant Garde” wrestles with the merits of art for art’s sake (“it’s ahead of the curve / it’s deceptively weighty, profound, absurd / it’s whatever fits” – a meta observation if ever there was one from one of the most iconoclastic artists to emerge from the New York rock underground.

“I suspected that intimate orchestral arrangements would bring out the emotion I sense is there in these songs,” says Byrne. “It’s something that folks don’t always hear in my work, but this time for sure I thought it was there. At the same time, I also see myself as someone who aspires to be accessible. I imagined that Kid Harpoon would help with that, as well as being a set of trusted ears, since there was a lot going on. People think of producers as people who mainly make a record sound good, and Kid Harpoon did that, but he was also aware of how important the storytelling is.”

An admitted “stickler when it comes to grooves,” Byrne welcomed late-in-the-game contributions from Skinner and Refosco, with whom he’s recorded and toured for more than 30 years. Mixed by Mark “Spike” Stent and mastered by Emily Lazar, the finished product is about both hiding and revealing, or as Byrne puts it, “a chance to be the mythical creature we all harbor inside. A chance to step into another reality. A chance to transcend and escape from the prison of our ‘selves.’” These concepts are heavily incorporated in the Who Is The Sky? album package, which was designed by Shira Inbar and finds Byrne nearly obscured by radiating, colored patterns and psychedelic, spiky outfits designed by Belgian artist Tom Van Der Borght.

“At my age, at least for me, there’s a ‘don’t give a shit about what people think’ attitude that kicks in,” Byrne says. “I can step outside my comfort zone with the knowledge that I kind of know who I am by now and sort of know what I’m doing. That said, every new set of songs, every song even, is a new adventure. There’s always a bit of, ‘how do I work this?’ I’ve found that not every collaboration works, but often when they do, it’s because I’m able to clearly impart what it is I’m trying to do. They hopefully get that, and as a result, we’re now joined together heading to the same unknown place.”

Posted by Liz and John Attaway, 11/5/25

Reservations Now Open for Dinner with Santa & Mrs. Claus at Atlanta’s Most Festive Ristorante

This holiday season, Amore e Amore is taking holiday magic to new heights. Beginning Wednesday, November 5, through Christmas Eve, Wednesday, December 24, 2025, Mama Gale and Professor Giovanni will once again transform their beloved Inman Park ristorante into The North (Highland) Pole, a whimsical winter wonderland overflowing with twinkling lights, glittering trees, and festive flourishes in celebration of Amore’s 25th anniversary during the most wonderful time of the year.

Along with over-the-top décor, themed cocktails, and a special holiday prix fixe menu, the restaurant will welcome back Dinner with Santa & Mrs. Claus—one of Atlanta’s most anticipated holiday dining experiences. Returning on November 25 and 28 and December 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, and 11, 2025, the evenings promise pure holiday cheer as Santa and Mrs. Claus spread joy to guests of all ages.

As guests dine, balloon artists, face painters, and roving entertainers fill the room with laughter and lighthearted energy. The North (Highland) Pole shimmers with nostalgia and whimsy, but it’s the joy shared around the table that truly makes the season shine.

“As we celebrate 25 years, we’re reminded how much this neighborhood and our guests have become part of our story,” says ‘Mama Gale’ Parker. “The holidays have always been our favorite time of year, and transforming Amore e Amore into The North (Highland) Pole feels like the perfect way to share the magic.”
