HORIZON THEATRE COMPANY PRESENTS ATLANTA PREMIERE OF THE HEART SELLERS: OCT 10 – NOV 9

Posted by Liz and John Attaway, 9/1/25

Tender immigrant comedy about food, friendship and finding your people comes to Inman Park

“…a little piece of magic, a respite in the storm, a reminder of good in the world.” – BroadwayWorld

Horizon Theatre’s highly anticipated 2025/2026 season will open this October with the Atlanta debut of The Heart Sellers, presented in partnership with East by Southeast, set to play Oct. 10 – Nov. 9 (with a press opening on Oct. 17). It’s Thanksgiving, 1973. The turkey’s frozen solid, the wine is flowing, and two young immigrant women—one from Korea, one from the Philippines—are navigating life in America with no recipe to follow.  What starts as a kitchen disaster becomes a funny, heartfelt night of honesty, laughter, confessions — and friendship.  A sharp, tender comedy about connection, identity and finding your people when you need them most.  The Heart Sellers at Horizon Theatre will star Michelle Pokopac (Horizon’s The Game and The Wolves) as Jane.

The Heart Sellers is full of laughter, warmth and honesty, while also honoring the challenges and resilience of the immigrant experience,” said Horizon Theatre Co-Artistic/Producing Director Lisa Adler. “We are excited to share this story in partnership with East by Southeast, amplifying Asian American voices and experiences on our stage.”

Written by award-winning playwright Lloyd Suh (The Chinese Lady, The Far County), The Heart Sellers introduces audiences to Jane, a Korean immigrant, and Luna, who is from the Philippines. Both are 23, recent immigrants, married to medical residents and feeling adrift in 1970s America. The pair meet by chance at a grocery store and strike up a friendship, which sees Luna invites herself over to Jane’s apartment for a disastrous Thanksgiving feast. What begins as awkward small talk becomes a night of deep conversation over glasses of wine, with the women bonding over shared dreams of going to Disneyland, learning to drive, throwing parties and discovering independence. Together, they reminisce about what they’ve left behind, what they hope for and what it means to belong in a country still new to them.

The Heart Sellers premiered at Milwaukee Repertory Theatre in 2023 and has since won national praise for its humor and heart. Critics have celebrated it as “a moving homage to friendship” and “a tender snapshot of two women embracing new lives while finding strength in each other.”

The play will be directed by guest director Michelle Chan, who recently helmed Suh’s The Chinese Lady at the Asolo Repertory Theatre. The cozy apartment set will be designed by Horizon’s resident set designers Moriah and Isabel Curley-Clay, who also designed The Heart Sellers for Florida Studio Theatre last season, and Horizon resident lighting designer Mary Parker.

Performances begin Friday, Oct. 10 at 8 p.m., with a Press Opening on Oct. 17 at 8 p.m. Performances are Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at 8 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., and Sunday at 5 p.m., running through Nov. 9. Special Wednesday matinees are scheduled for Oct. 22 and Oct. 29 at 2 p.m. Seating is general admission with a reserved seating section for subscribers. Season tickets are now on sale starting at $150 for a 5-play season.  General admission tickets start at $45 (Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. $50 for all Saturday and Sunday performances). Ticket prices include all fees and taxes. Prices rise as performances fill up, so patrons are encouraged to order early for the best prices and availability. Full-time students under 25 can get $20 tickets with valid student ID by calling the box office or at the door if tickets are available. There is limited accessible seating for those needing mobility accommodation, and it must be reserved by phone. For tickets and more information, visit horizontheatre.com or call the Box Office at 404.584.7450.

THROW YOURSELF TO THE SWORD

ANNOUNCE 2025 TOUR DATES

As postmodern society crumbles, Texas four-piece Die Spitz combine their passion, friendship, identity, and artistry to fight against the inescapable decay that surrounds life on their debut album, Something to Consume, due Sept 12 via Third Man Records. “There’s a political side to it, but addiction and love can also be all-consuming,” Ellie Livingston says. And as the band trade off instruments, swapping songwriting and vocal duties, and generating powerful songwriting in concussive bursts, Die Spitz have created their own little pocket of the world where we can all stand on the edge together.

The Austinites express their ideas through a blend of classic punk, hardcore, metal, alt rock and more. The group has become known for their riotous live shows, where dueling cartwheels, climbing of rafters and solos while crowdsurfing could happen at any moment. “Something to Consume is an album experience for everyone. Whether you’re craving a smack of lively metal or a melancholy wave of grungey violin, there’s a piece of all of us injected. Something to Consume is a call to the multitudes of ways we as humans allow consumption to enrapture our culture as well as ourselves.”

That shapeshifting strength comes into full view on the explosive lead single “Throw Yourself to the Sword”, released today alongside a video by Emily Sanchez. “‘Throw Yourself to the Sword’ is a high-energy ode to what we want young people to feel. There’s a lot of existentialism and despair in other songs on the album that still sheath the same theme, but ‘Throw Yourself to the Sword’ is the raise of optimism. Despite living in a state of mundanity or hopelessness, you can still rise up and fight the unknown, as long as you’re willing to throw yourself to it,” Ellie Livingston explains.

Something to Consume moves with rapturous conviction thanks in part to the deft production hand of Studio 4’s Will Yip (Turnstile, Mannequin Pussy). Though only recently in their 20s, Die Spitz’s impressive musicianship ties them clearly to a long lineage of frustrated people hoping to inspire change. “Some people aren’t interested in being political activists via music, but it weighs on me heavily and I feel misaligned with my calling if I don’t,” Chloe De St. Aubin says. “The four of us are free spirits with multiple interests, and there’s no limit or power dynamic that can derail us.”

Additionally, Die Spitz is announcing a headline tour behind Something to Consume. All dates below.

Die Spitz is Ava Schrobilgen, Chloe De St. Aubin, Ellie Livingston, and Kate Halter.

NETHERWORLD HAUNTED HOUSE BRINGING MONSTERS & MAYHEM TO DRAGON CON 2025

Posted by Liz and John Attaway, 8/26/25

DATES YOU NEED TO KNOW…
Thursday, Aug. 28 – Monday, Sept. 1 | Dragon Con Weekend
Saturday, Aug. 30, 10 a.m. | Dragon Con Parade on Peachtree Street; broadcast live on CBS Atlanta (WUPA, Channel 69) at 10 a.m. EST
Friday, Sept. 19 | NETHERWORLD Haunted House Opening Night

This Labor Day Weekend, the streets of downtown Atlanta will tremble as NETHERWORLD Haunted House brings its legion of monsters to Dragon Con. From grotesque new fiends and fan-favorite creatures to an elaborate parade float brimming with terror, NETHERWORLD will once again fuse fright and fantasy as it kicks off its 29th Season of Screams in spine-chilling style.

As the sponsor of Dragon Con’s Horror Track programming, NETHERWORLD will be present all weekend with a booth located on the Marquis level of the Atlanta Marriott Marquis. There, fans can snap photos with NETHERWORLD’s famous monsters, learn about this year’s attractions, snag discounts for Escape the NETHERWORLD, and even sign up to join the “Netherspawn” crew for the upcoming season.

In the iconic Dragon Con Parade, spectators will get the very first glimpse of new nightmare-fueled characters from NETHERWORLD’s 2025 themes — the epic monster showdown MONSTERS ATTACK! and the twisted double feature OBLIVION: RETURN OF THE MANGLER and GRENDEL’S FEAST. Alongside the acclaimed attraction’s float, legendary Netherworld denizens will unleash a sneak peek of the fearsome battles, grotesque creations, and sinister clowns that await haunt-goers this fall.

“Dragon Con is our official start to haunt season and the ultimate stage to introduce our new characters and themes,” said NETHERWORLD Haunted House Co-Creator Ben Armstrong. “For 2025, we’re unleashing massive new monsters, mind-bending sets, and some of the most ambitious haunts in our history. Dragon Con gives us the chance to share that excitement with fans before we open our doors, and we can’t wait to see their reactions!”

A few short weeks after Dragon Con, the scares officially open for its 29th Season of Screams on Friday, Sept. 19. Guests will journey through the monstrous chaos of MONSTERS ATTACK! before plunging into the horrific depths of OBLIVION: RETURN OF THE MANGLER and the grotesque carnival of GRENDEL’S FEAST. Between haunts, visitors can explore the NETHERWORLD Midway, packed with roaming creatures, food, games, photo ops, and festive fun. Tickets — including General Admission and Speed Passes for faster entry — are on sale now at Fearworld.com, and fans are encouraged to purchase early to secure their spot.

AN ASHEVILLE WEEKEND GETAWAY 2025

Posted by Liz and John Attaway, 8/24/25

The SUITE-est hotel in Asheville, NC is the Embassy Suites Downtown Asheville. John and I took a weekend getaway up to beautiful Asheville, NC and fell in love with the downtown area all because we stayed in this brand-new hotel that is just SUITE! It is steps from downtown attractions like Grove Arcade, restaurants, bars, nightlife, and a ton of Asheville’s big breweries!

Beyond the perfect location, the hotel is a stunner! You step inside the sweeping and large lobby and welcomed by lounge vibes with comfy couches, beautiful pendant lighting, marble waterfall features, tons of seating around the electric fireplace, and a large bar and restaurant.

Upstairs in the room, you’ll find clean, comfortable, spacious king suites like our room! You walk into a den and living space where you can relax and watch TV on the large comfy couch. Around the corner is the large king bedroom with one of the comfiest mattresses! There is a gorgeous bathroom with tons of white tile and clean, modern lines, walking shower and large vanity area.

Amenities. One of the biggest perks at staying at an Embassy Suites is their hot free breakfast with omelette making station to customize your own omelette, all the usual breakfast suspects and even banana bread! Another is the 5pm happy hour with 2 free drinks and a bunch of salty snacks, dip, veggies, and fruit! Of course they have a pool, fitness area, and business area.

Soprana Rooftop Cocina

And wait until you see the gorgeous rooftop bar, which is the spot for pizza and views in downtown Asheville, Soprana Rooftop Cocina. It is a gorgeous Italian cucina with sweeping mountain views! Once I saw the space, I was super excited to try it, and it was one of the best meals experiences all weekend! They have staple Italian fare, an extensive brick-oven pizza list, a fun creative cocktail menu, wines, all set to the mountains in the background! To my surprise my favorite dish is the burrata. I do like burrata, but this one was sensational! Think cool and mild cheese encased in a mild cheese shell then served with fresh, local, sweet, ripe peaches and the best earthy yet herbaceous pesto! The entire bite was a flavor train.

The other appetizers I got were the Meatballs and the oven roasted chicken wings. The meatballs are rich, meaty, herbaceous and fall apart tender local beef and pork. Plus, they jam some ricotta in it for a creaminess! Topped and surrounded by a tasty, tangy herbed tomato sauce, fresh herbs and mozzarella, and finally finished with sharp pecorino. The other appetizer is the large, tender, and juicy chicken wings. Rubbed with the local delicious Spicewalla Italian dry rub then doused in garlic butter and a hint of charred lemon. I paired it with their Luxe Limone, their limoncello cocktail. It is an herbaceous gin, house made limoncello, creamy egg white, sweet vanilla, and you can’t miss the sweet meringue on top!

For dinner, the Asheville pizza hit the spot. It is the classic spicy pepperoni and a hot honey combination! It so good! Crunchy yet light and fluffy pizza topped with lots of local spicy pepperoni, fresh mozzarella, local smoky, spicy Asheville bee charmer smokin’ hot honey, and a tangy herbaceous marinara. I got the Honey I’m Blushing cocktail with it. A creamy almond cream with a warm reposado tequila, tangy blood orange, and a hint of lemon. For dessert came the Flourless torte. A rich and deep chocolate dessert in a flaky shell then topped with candied and toasted hazelnut and creamy Nutella.

Grove Arcade

John and I took a day to explore everything Grove Arcade; it is truly THE destination in Asheville. As Asheville’s original mall, with gorgeous 1920s architecture and a hint of New Orleans funk, there is so much to find here. They have shops, dining, and more all in one place and in a building built in the 1920s and opened in 1929! It has a rich history!

Some of the Grove Arcade highlights include, grabbing a coffee or bevy and a beignet at Babette’s to fuel your day. They have so many shops, so peruse the many shops including my favorite, Razberry Threads. After that, grab lunch at Carmel’s as they have an assortment of southern fare. I loved their deviled eggs with candied bacon and a glass of wine.

In the afternoon, sip on suds from Wedege Brewing downtown. I got the dry Irish stout and John got a Pilsner. We visited the original back over 10 years ago and are glad to visit them again! After some more shopping, my favorite spot I found is the Battery Park Book Exchange. It is a champagne and bookstore where I tried their La Grande Tour champagne flight. And this is real champagne from France! One of the ones I tried, Monopole, was a brand served on the Titanic! Finish off the day with dinner at Asheville Proper. The best bite is their tender and rich Wagyu zebuton! I paired it with a boozy Manhattan and their earthy local mushrooms. A great dinner spot.
