WOODLAND SPIRITS HAUNT FERNBANK MUSEUM FOR ITS SIXTH YEAR

Posted by Liz and John Attaway, 10/8/23

The outdoor exhibit is open from Sept. 30 – Nov. 5.

Returning for its sixth year, guests can take a walk on the supernatural side when Fernbank Museum is “friendly-haunted” in the outdoor exhibit, “Woodland Spirits.” Dozens of ghostly figures will take over the nature trails of WildWoods and
Fernbank Forest from Sept. 30 – Nov. 5, 2023.

Inspired by the imagery of dark forests in movies and literature, “Woodland Spirits” transforms Fernbank’s “forest in the city” into a ghostly hideaway that’s perfect for all ages. Guests will discover these human and animal spirits — created by artist Laura Lewis — lurking in the shadows, floating in the trees and waiting to greet you in plain sight.

“Woodland Spirits” is open for the fall season, from Sept. 30 – Nov. 5.

RELATED PROGRAMMING
“Woodland Spirits” will also be able to view on several of Fernbank’s seasonal daytime and evening events this fall, including:

  • Early-morning and late-night access during one of Fernbank’s forest walks, which are led

for a separate purchase at varying prices.
  • The family-friendly Discovery Day, “Monster Mash,” will take place from 10 a.m. – 1
p.m. on Oct. 28 and is included with daytime general admission. “Monster Mash” will
include trick-or-treating, Halloween-themed activities and an opportunity to check out
the new exhibit “Vikings: Warriors of the Sea” in addition to “Woodland Spirits.”
  • The after-hours event “Fernbank After Dark: Boos and Booze” is from 7 – 11 p.m. on
Oct. 13. This adults-only night will include cocktails and tapas for an additional purchase,
spooky experiments and entry to the full museum. Tickets are $17.95 for members and
    $22.95 for nonmembers.
  • “Fright Night” will be from 7 – 11 p.m. on Oct. 27, which is for souls 21 and older. This
Halloween party encourages adults to dress up in their best costumes and enjoy a night
of music, refreshments and entry to the special exhibit, “Vikings: Warriors of the Sea.”
    Tickets are $21.95.
  • A Halloween event for all ages, “Ghostly Gatherings” is from 7 – 10 p.m. on Oct. 14 and
will have exclusive nighttime access to “Woodland Spirits” and “Vikings: Warriors of the
Sea,” as well as fun seasonal activities. Drinks and small bites are also available for
additional purchase. Tickets are $15.95 for members and $19.95 for nonmembers.
  • “Woodland Spirits and other Musical Creatures,” as performed by pianist Julie
Coucheron, harpist Elisabeth Remy-Johnson, flutist James Zellers and the Vega Quartet,
is a family concert that includes the music of Eduard MacDowell and Valerie Von Pechy
Whitcup. This concert will take place at 1 p.m. on Oct. 15 and is included with general

The most highly-acclaimed and terrifying haunted house in the nation, NETHERWORLD Haunted House, is set to make its return during its Opening Weekend this Friday, Sept. 23 and Saturday, Sept. 24 with two nightmarish haunts and plenty of thrilling new additions to its Halloween themed Midway!

This year, thrill seekers will get the scare of their lives at NETHERWORLD’S PARASITIC and THE UNDYING HORROR haunted houses. In THE UNDYING HORROR, visitors will try to escape a massive world-destroying ancient monster and its wraithlike army, and in PARASITIC, guests will confront the mind-controlling spores and carnivorous chlorophyll creatures unleashed by a nefarious plant-based life form filled with the twisted power from last year’s Planet X!

“Both of our haunts this year blend elements of our previous stories into brand new tales, even more intense than the ones that came before them,” said NETHERWORLD Co-Founder Ben Armstrong. “The UNDYING HORROR is a continuation of the COSMIC HORROR saga that began when we first moved to Stone Mountain, and PARASITIC is a story of science gone wrong that features weird plant-based mutations of one of our classic characters, The Harvestman.”

Between the houses, NETHERWORLD has a new option for those who want to join in on the fright called “You Scare.” In this experience, true horror-lovers will get their shot at playing the villain by using a paintball gun, dubbed the “scare blaster,” to shoot paint at an unbreakable see-through barrier, startling those in line for the second haunted house.

In addition to both blood-curling haunts and “You Scare,” NETHERWORLD is launching a laser-based horror survival add-on experience for the first time ever. Titled “Alien Terror,” the experience will put NETHERWORLD adventurers face-to-face with an extraterrestrial monster that has one goal: to turn every player in the game into one of its evil minions with its laser weapon. The official opening date for this experience is to be announced, so stay tuned for more information!

The adventure continues with NETHERWORLD’s updated Midway experience, a Halloween-drenched area that attendees can explore featuring a myriad of creepy photo ops (including a huge new skeletal dragon), roaming creatures aplenty, and a variety of food options including hot dogs, nachos, demented donuts, and gourmet popcorn in flavors like classic butter and hot and spicy. This year NETHERWORLD is also introducing Dr. Octane’s Bizarre Beverages, where the sinister mad scientist Dr. Octane will serve up non-alcoholic bubbling concoctions featuring swirls of colors perfect for a share-worthy video!

“We are incredibly excited for veteran NETHERWORLD fans and first-timers alike to experience everything that we have to offer this year,” said NETHERWORLD Co-Founder Billy Messina. “Our goal has always been to provide visitors with a seasonal Halloween experience that’s beyond compare…and with all the upgrades we’ve made this year, both inside and outside the haunts, we hope that folks will feel that we’ve done exactly that.”

NETHERWORLD Haunted House will be open beginning the weekend of Sept. 23–24, then most dates through Halloween and weekends in November until the closing weekend on Nov. 11–12. Tickets are on sale now. For more details on the haunts and new additions and to buy tickets, visit www.fearworld.com

THE UNDYING HORROR: Concealed in the chaos of a deadly storm, an ancient monstrosity launches massive tentacles to the surface world corrupting everything they touch! Can a battle-worn group of survivors fight their way past the legions of Wraiths and Netherspawn to defeat this nightmarish creature or will the world fall to The Undying Horror?

Featuring: Warlike Wraiths, Rampaging Netherspawn, The Weird Lab of Dr. Squid, The Old One Arises, The Emergence of the Undying, The Monster-Infested Netherscape, The Undead Army of the Zombie Queen, The Swirling Mists of Zin, The Massive Tentacles of Ubbo Sathla, The Bone Beasts of Carcosa and Face to Face with the Undying Horror! A massive feast of nightmares invades a shattered planet as NETHERWORLD charges headlong into its 26th Season of Screams swarming with supercharged apocalyptic action!

PARASITIC: A bizarre Parasitic plant-based life form filled with the twisted power of Planet X and grown on a discarded husk of The Harvestman springs to unnatural life in the top-secret facility known as the BOX! After infecting the staff with mind-controlling spores and unleashing an army of carnivorous plant and fungus-based creatures, it seeks vengeance on its foolish captors before attempting to escape into the world of men!

Featuring: The Fungal Zombies, The Pit of The Green Slime, The Worm that Gnaws, The Monster that Challenged the World, Swamp Beast Horror, Deadly Nightshade, The Chlorophyll Killers, The Bloody Massacre of the Mutilated, Exo Biological Evil Unleashed, The Primeval Pawns of the Parasite, The Nightmare Run and Get to the Chopper!
