JANINE COMING TO THE MASQUERADE IN ATLANTA ON 10/16

Posted by Liz and John Attaway, 9/17/25

Jane coming to the Masquerade in Atlanta on October 16th

“Everything had been flipped upside down, my heart ripped out of my chest, and I didn’t know how I could keep living.” New Zealand singer/songwriter Janine is no stranger to grief. A few years ago, the kiwi-born, LA-based songstress unexpectedly lost her hero, her father, while visiting back home and opted to stay in her native homeland to take care of her mum. Since then, Janine has been deeply immersed in writing this album, aptly titled Pain and Paradise, which is out today, Friday, August 22nd, on Little Mixtape Records. From soulful ballads to airy house-influenced anthems, Janine wrote and produced much of the album herself and on the focus track “Happy,” she captures the tension between hope and vulnerability over a classic piano-led melody and hypnotic percussion.

Melding R&B soundscapes with pop sensibilities, the record’s 16 tracks explore the juxtaposition of life’s beauty and its most painful moments. Standing in the stillness of New Zealand’s rugged beauty, Janine experienced heartache in solace. “I knew I was so lucky to be in such a beautiful place and most importantly, lucky to have loved so deeply that the weight of loss could be so heavy. I stood there and thought, wow this is the most unbearable Pain and Paradise. I decided that the album would be named ‘Pain and Paradise’ because I believe that they always coexist.”

Janine has been on the charts since her debut release in 2014. With several Billboard charting singles & albums, a New Zealand Critics Choice nomination, a 2015 win for Best R&B album for New Zealand Music Awards and numerous sold out tours between Australia, Europe, New Zealand and the US – Janine’s impact is universal.

Janine will kick off her North American headline tour next month! Starting in Ferndale, Michigan at The Magic Bag the tour will make notable stops in New York with a show at Music Hall of Williamsburg, D.C, Los Angeles at Terragram Ballroom on October 22nd and close out with a final show in Oakland at Crybaby on October 24 – find a show near you and get tickets HERE. LA INDIE-ROCK BAND GOON HEADS TO ATLANTA – SEPTEMBER 25 AT THE EARL

Posted by Liz and John Attaway, 9/6/25

Los Angeles indie-psych-folk-rock band Goon is headed to Atlanta on 9/25 at The Earl

ABOUT GOON: San Diego-born, LA-based frontman Kenny Beckerhad a record’s worth of new songs ready to record, studio time booked, and a vision for how it would all play out. But weeks into the recording, life hit him like a lightning bolt in the form of the sudden dissolution of his marriage and his subsequent psychic spiral. Blindsided by heartbreak, the music Becker had written for the record began to take on new meaning. What had come from joy was now something closer to agony. In the friction of that moment, Becker pushed his band—and his songwriting—into stranger territory. Facing down the pain and disappointment of life, the band created a masterpiece with their new album, Dream 3.

DREAM 3 ALBUM BIO

We always think we have a plan. We will walk into a situation with a purpose and an idea, only to find that life has other things in store for us. Goon frontman and creative mastermind, Kenny Becker, had a record’s worth of new songs ready to record, studio time booked, and a vision for how it would all play out.

Goon began 2015 as singer and multi-instrumentalist Kenny Becker’s solo project, releasing a compilation of his best home recordings, the 2016 EP Dusk of Punk. With a full band in tow, Goon released the band’s first full-length, 2019’s Heaven is Humming on Partisan Records. Becker recruited a new band—Andy Polito on drums, Dillon Peralta on guitar, and Tamara Simons on bass—and recorded the self-released Paint By Numbers 1. A second LP, Hour of Green Evening, and another EP, Red Ladder, soon followed in 2022. To support Hour of Green Evening, Goon hit the road hard, touring and playing shows with Built to Spill, Jadu Heart, Slow Pulp, Teethe, Squirrel Flower, and many others. Amidst all this, the band signed with Philadelphia label Born Losers and began recording their next LP with Claire Morison at Wild Horizon Sound in Los Angeles. Dream 3 melds the intimate, lo-fi stylings of Goon with the live-band sound of Hour of Green Evening; a veteran band exploring every aspect of their sound, pushing themselves into new musical and emotional realms.

I began this record so excited,” says Becker. “The songwriting was less scripted, letting me loosen up the reins and follow whatever idea seemed most interesting. It started as a joyful recording process. Then came the most devastating time of my life.” The result is an often darker, more introspective album, built on personal loss and the chaotic crumbling of the outside world, without losing Goon’s signature sense of strangeness and wonder. Weaving lyrics about personal and ecological collapse with references to baseball, aliens, and Tony Soprano, the record expands Goon’s sound while holding close to the band’s core identity. Dream 3 offers an exquisitely crafted sonic world, full of heartbreak and pain, but also brimming with color and life, the hope of better days to come. “Begin Here” is the gateway into the record. The song emerges in a dreamy, reverse-guitar haze, Becker’s voice hovering over Braden Lawrence’s drums like a bird in flight, surveying the green wreckage of his world. “With ligaments split at sunrise/Bubbling dirt from my mouth,” Becker sings, “I’m open, scraped, and doe-eyed.” It’s the sound of a band discovering new life after torment, the way cataclysm brings its sufferers closer. Becker drops the surreal imagery for something more direct, referencing his bandmate as he sings, “Let me cry to Tamara.” “The song started as a little reversed guitar progression that I had kicking around for a while,” says Becker. “I showed it to our bass player, Tamara, who had a strong reaction to it and insisted we flesh it out. When I sing, ‘Let me cry to Tamara’ at the end, that’s because it’s what I was doing all the time we were recording it. To me, that song has this sunny, upbeat melody, but it’s coming from a place of total despair. I like that tension.”

HORIZON THEATRE COMPANY PRESENTS ATLANTA PREMIERE OF THE HEART SELLERS: OCT 10 – NOV 9

Posted by Liz and John Attaway, 9/1/25

Tender immigrant comedy about food, friendship and finding your people comes to Inman Park

“…a little piece of magic, a respite in the storm, a reminder of good in the world.” – BroadwayWorld

Horizon Theatre’s highly anticipated 2025/2026 season will open this October with the Atlanta debut of The Heart Sellers, presented in partnership with East by Southeast, set to play Oct. 10 – Nov. 9 (with a press opening on Oct. 17). It’s Thanksgiving, 1973. The turkey’s frozen solid, the wine is flowing, and two young immigrant women—one from Korea, one from the Philippines—are navigating life in America with no recipe to follow.  What starts as a kitchen disaster becomes a funny, heartfelt night of honesty, laughter, confessions — and friendship.  A sharp, tender comedy about connection, identity and finding your people when you need them most.  The Heart Sellers at Horizon Theatre will star Michelle Pokopac (Horizon’s The Game and The Wolves) as Jane.

The Heart Sellers is full of laughter, warmth and honesty, while also honoring the challenges and resilience of the immigrant experience,” said Horizon Theatre Co-Artistic/Producing Director Lisa Adler. “We are excited to share this story in partnership with East by Southeast, amplifying Asian American voices and experiences on our stage.”

Written by award-winning playwright Lloyd Suh (The Chinese Lady, The Far County), The Heart Sellers introduces audiences to Jane, a Korean immigrant, and Luna, who is from the Philippines. Both are 23, recent immigrants, married to medical residents and feeling adrift in 1970s America. The pair meet by chance at a grocery store and strike up a friendship, which sees Luna invites herself over to Jane’s apartment for a disastrous Thanksgiving feast. What begins as awkward small talk becomes a night of deep conversation over glasses of wine, with the women bonding over shared dreams of going to Disneyland, learning to drive, throwing parties and discovering independence. Together, they reminisce about what they’ve left behind, what they hope for and what it means to belong in a country still new to them.

The Heart Sellers premiered at Milwaukee Repertory Theatre in 2023 and has since won national praise for its humor and heart. Critics have celebrated it as “a moving homage to friendship” and “a tender snapshot of two women embracing new lives while finding strength in each other.”

The play will be directed by guest director Michelle Chan, who recently helmed Suh’s The Chinese Lady at the Asolo Repertory Theatre. The cozy apartment set will be designed by Horizon’s resident set designers Moriah and Isabel Curley-Clay, who also designed The Heart Sellers for Florida Studio Theatre last season, and Horizon resident lighting designer Mary Parker.

Performances begin Friday, Oct. 10 at 8 p.m., with a Press Opening on Oct. 17 at 8 p.m. Performances are Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at 8 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., and Sunday at 5 p.m., running through Nov. 9. Special Wednesday matinees are scheduled for Oct. 22 and Oct. 29 at 2 p.m. Seating is general admission with a reserved seating section for subscribers. Season tickets are now on sale starting at $150 for a 5-play season.  General admission tickets start at $45 (Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. $50 for all Saturday and Sunday performances). Hadestown will play for a one-weekend limited engagement at the Fox Theatre as part of the 2025/2026 Regions Bank Broadway in Atlanta season from Nov. 14 – 16. The performance schedule is as follows:

Friday                                                8 p.m.
Saturday                                           2 p.m., 8 p.m.
Sunday                                              1 p.m., 6:30 p.m.

Hadestown was the most honored show of the 2018-2019 Broadway season. In addition to the show’s eight Tony Awards®, it was honored with four Drama Desk Awards, six Outer Critics Circle Awards, including Outstanding New Broadway Musical, and the Drama League Award for Outstanding Production of a Musical.

“Scorching! Stunning! Both unmistakably timely and irresistibly entertaining.”
 Catey Sullivan, Chicago Sun-Times

The acclaimed new musical is by celebrated singer-songwriter and Tony Award® winner Anaïs Mitchell and developed with original director and Tony Award® winner Rachel ChavkinHadestown marks the first time in over a decade that a woman has been the solo author of a musical: writing the music, lyrics, and book, and is the fourth time in Broadway history a woman has accomplished this creative feat.

“Mesmerizing! Hadestown arrives in smoldering fashion. Unfurling like a dream, the show achieves a fluidity of musical theater storytelling that makes an old tale seem startlingly new.”
Charles McNulty, Los Angeles Times

The show opened at the Walter Kerr Theatre on Broadway (219 West 48th Street, New York) on April 17, 2019, where it played sold out houses nightly before performances were suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Hadestown resumed performances September 2, 2021 as one of the first musicals to reopen on Broadway where it continues to play today.

The show originated as Mitchell’s indie theater project that toured Vermont which she then turned into an acclaimed album. With Chavkin, her artistic collaborator, Hadestown has been transformed into a genre-defying new musical that blends modern American folk music with New Orleans-inspired jazz to reimagine a sweeping ancient tale.

Following two intertwining love stories — that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of King Hades and his wife Persephone — Hadestown invites audiences on a hell-raising journey to the underworld and back. Mitchell’s beguiling melodies and Chavkin’s poetic imagination pit industry against nature, doubt against faith, and fear against love. Performed by a vibrant ensemble of actors, dancers, and singers, Hadestown delivers a deeply resonant and defiantly hopeful theatrical experience.

“Welcome to the intriguing and beautiful world of “your next musical theater obsession.”
Vogue

Hadestown electrified audiences with its 2016 world premiere at New York Theatre Workshop, which is the longest-running show in that celebrated theater’s 40-year history. The production then received its Canadian premiere at Edmonton’s Citadel Theatre in 2017 and then a 2018 sold-out engagement at the London’s National Theatre. Hadestown was developed with funding from the Eli and Edythe Broad Stage at the Santa Monica College Performing Arts Center and was further developed by The Ground Floor at Berkeley Repertory Theatre. Hadestown was co-conceived by Ben t. Matchstick.

The Grammy® winning Hadestown Original Broadway Cast Recording is now available at Hadestown.com/music. The album is produced by David Lai, Sickafoose, and Mitchell on Sing It Again Records.

GOLDEN WOLF

NEW ALBUM FROM ACCLAIMED MUSICIAN ANGUS STONE

O

NORTH AMERICAN HEADLINE TOUR KICKS OFF THIS MONTH

Today, DOPE LEMON — the award-winning project of acclaimed Australian musician Angus Stone—releases their highly anticipated fifth album, Golden Wolf, via BMG. Along with the album, DOPE LEMON also shares the album’s focus track, “She’s All Time” ft. Nina Nesbitt LISTEN & WATCH. Later this month, DOPE LEMON also returns to North America for his Spring headline tour and festival stops at Bonnaroo and Bottle Rock see the full list of tour dates below

Golden Wolf blends reflective introspection with wild sonic landscapes. If Kimosabè felt like a classic road anthem album for a cosmic journey, Golden Wolf opens the door to a wilder, more uncertain frontier. The songs here are still anchored by Stone’s trademark grooves, but they feel looser, more windswept, capturing the heat of endless desert days and the cool mystery of moonlit nights.

Songs like Electric Green Lamboswagger in with confidence—smooth, effortless, and undeniably cool. “She’s All Time” conjures visions of sun-soaked dreams, poolside dancing with an ethereal, unknowable muse. Sugarcat slinks through shadows, playful yet elusive, leaving only traces of its presence behind. And then there’s “John Belushi,” stirring up a whirlwind of reckless energy, arms wide open in the chaos. It’s big, bold, and impossible to pin down, echoing with laughter and wildness, though its true meaning always seems just out of reach. Each track invites you deeper, without ever fully giving itself away.

‘GOLDEN WOLF’ TRACKLISTING

01 – John Belushi

02 – Sugarcat

03 – Electric Green Lambo

04 – Golden Wolf

05 – Yamasuki – Yama Yama

06 – We Solid Gold

07 – She’s All Time

08 – Maggie’s Moonshine

09 – On The 45

10 – Dust Of A Thousand Stars

This new chapter reveals Stone at his most open yet—peeling back layers of silky sheened memories, imagination and thought-provoking insights. It unveils what he’s built over the many years of the Dope Lemon Temple, where so many listeners go to dip their minds in the music, only to find themselves in another land. In Kimosabè, we saw Stone reflect on his youth and the roads that shaped him. Now, in Golden Wolf, he’s grappling with the question of where the road leads next.

HORIZON THEATRE COMPANY PRESENTS ATLANTA PREMIERE OF LAUGHS IN SPANISH – MAY 23 TO JUNE 22

Posted by Liz and John Attaway, 5/22/25

Latin-infused comedy to play at Inman Park theatre

“A great show… I can see the play itself becoming a new American Classic.” – Broadway World

Part telenovela, part whodunnit, Laughs in Spanish comes to Horizon Theatre May 23 – June 22. High stakes Art Basel is about to begin in Miami, and the art has vanished from Mariana’s trendy modern art gallery! Chaos erupts—and so does laughter— in this fast-paced comedy. Artist and intern Caro and her policeman boyfriend are scrambling to find the thief or replace the art when Mari’s larger-than-life movie-star mother shows up, stealing the spotlight yet again. Then a past girl-crush arrives, and things get even more complicado. Laughs in Spanish is a joyous celebration of Latinx creativity, messy love, mothers and daughters, and the beautiful challenge of finding your place—and your people. This production is performed in English.

Laughs in Spanish is a vibrant, heartfelt comedy that shines a light on the joy and chaos of a Latinx family and identity,” said Horizon Theatre Co-Artistic/Producing Director Lisa Adler. “It’s fresh, funny and full of heart—perfect for anyone who loves a good laugh with a lot of soul.

At the helm of this cafecito-infused comedy is Erika Miranda, a Mexican-Norwegian actor, producer, director and founder of the Atlanta-based, incubative production company Cafecito Productions.  Erika is also an alumna of the Horizon Apprentice Company and was last seen on the Horizon stage in The Wolves

Laughs in Spanish is a joyful comedy about art, identity and the beautiful chaos of being a daughter… or a mother… or a lover,” Director Erika Miranda explains. “Set in a Miami art gallery during the frenzy of Art Basel, the play kicks off with the entire exhibit being robbed and everyone pointing fingers. But the real drama is not just the missing art—it’s the emotional masterpieces we’re all trying to restore at home. The characters remind us that love isn’t always neat, vulnerability is never easy, and sometimes — rather than say ‘I love you,’ ‘I need you’ or ‘I believe in you’— we build cinematic empires and embark on life-altering adventures.  It’s heartfelt, hilarious and alive with the messy magic that unfolds when we begin to see our mothers not just as parents, but as people. Come for the laughs. Stay for the catharsis. Call your mother after.”

Miranda’s company’s first production, Mi Casa, which was first performed at Horizon during the Apprentice Company, can be found on all HBO platforms. Films produced by Cafecito Productions have been screened at festivals across the country, including Cleveland International and Palm Springs Short Fest. Trailer [Trash] Magic, Erika’s directorial debut, won the GA Film Impact Grant and premiered at LALIFF in 2024. Erika was also named One of the Amazing Women in Film by Oz Magazine (2023) and one of Georgia’s Top Industry Influencers by Georgia Entertainment (2024).  Erika is also first Executive Producer of SheATL Arts (of SheNY), a festival that mentors up-and-coming women playwrights.

In Laughs in Spanish, the stakes are high for young Miami gallery owner, Mariana (Ana Miramontes, seen regionally in productions at Houston’s Alley Theatre, Theatre Squared and Florida Studio Theatre), when art goes missing on the eve of Art Basel. Her artist intern, MFA student Caro (Lorena Guillen Castillo, SheATLBFA NYU Tisch) and Caro’s policeman boyfriend Juan (Marcello Audino, City Springs’ Legally Blonde, Theatrical Outfit’s Clyde’s, Aurora’s The Play That Goes Wrong) are onsite to help through the panic while also uncovering some surprises of their own.  When Mariana’s movie-star mother (Denise Arribas, Horizon’s Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike and The Book Club Play) and a past girl-crush (Mabel Thomas, BA Royal Conservatoire of Scotland) show up, the complications rise in this fast-paced comedy about art and success, love and romance, and mothers and daughters.

submission to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe later that year, playing a one-month run and featuring student actors. SIX went
on to get picked up by UK Producers and a new production was mounted, with professional actors and a predominantly
new creative team, at the Norwich Playhouse and then again at Edinburgh Festival in 2018. A limited engagement at the
Arts Theatre in London garnered the WhatsOnStage Award for Best Off-West End Production and the show toured the UK
in the autumn of 2018 before returning to the Arts Theatre and subsequently the Lyric Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue. SIX
is currently playing an open-ended run at the Vaudeville Theatre on the Strand. SIX earned five 2019 Laurence Olivier
Award nominations, including Best New Musical.
