ATHENS RESTAURANT WEEK 2022

Posted by Liz and John Attaway, 7/11/22

Visit Athens GA Highlights Unique Dining Venues

Ahead of Annual Athens Restaurant Week

The second annual Athens Restaurant Week will take place from July 11-17, 2022, offering residents and visitors a taste of the budding dining destination

Visit Athens GA, The Athens Convention & Visitors Bureau, is celebrating the upcoming Athens Restaurant Week by sharing unique dining venues and authentic culinary experiences that residents and visitors can enjoy in the destination. The week-long celebration taking place July 11-17, 2022 will offer curated menus and specials from the best local restaurants and taprooms.

“Athens Restaurant Week celebrates the resiliency of our vibrant restaurant community and encourages residents and visitors to support these businesses by dining local,” said Katie Williams, Director of the Athens Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Participating restaurants will offer various pre-fixed options for lunch and dinner at special prices all week long. Lunch specials will have at least two courses priced at $10 or $15 and dinner specials will feature at least three courses priced at $25 or $35. Local breweries are also getting in on the action by offering beer flights for $10. Additionally, dessert spots will have special creations for just $5.

“Restaurant Week is the perfect opportunity for Athenians and visitors to experience the culinary creations of Athens’ talented chefs,” said Linda Ford, Director of Business Services at the Athens Downtown Development Authority.

Located 60 miles northeast of Atlanta, Athens has emerged as a top dining destination in recent years. James Beard winner Hugh Acheson helped put the destination on the map, first with his own Five & Ten, then with an ever-expanding list of restaurants opened by chefs who came up through the Five & Ten kitchen. Those participating in Athens Restaurant Week include:

  • home.made – Chef Mimi Maumus pulls from her New Orleans roots as well as her decades in Georgia for inspiration at home.made. The restaurant has drawn national attention from her inventive twists on old standards and local community ingredients. Earlier this year, Maumus opened a new bar space attached to home.made called Sidecar, which provides an outlet for her creativity in food and drinks, including non-alcoholic cocktails.
  • The National  This neighborhood gathering spot serves an expansive menu inspired by the cuisines of the Mediterranean and Spain, with seasonal influences from the bounty of farmers in Northeast Georgia. Founder Peter Dale (owner of Seabear Oyster Bar, Condor Chocolates and Maepole) brought together a team of brilliant hospitality professionals, including Chefs Jeremy Collins and Daniel Fetter, to deliver incredible food and beverage offerings at this local favorite.

In addition to fiercely independent restaurants, Athens is known for its award-winning craft beer scene. Recognizing the vibrant beer culture that has been fostered in Athens over the past two decades, Visit Athens GA launched The Athens Beer Trail in the fall of 2021. The trail takes visitors through the nine-mile area of Athens breweries, including Athentic Brewing CompanyNormaltown Brewing Company and Southern Brewing Company which are participating in the upcoming Athens Restaurant Week.

Roswell Restaurant Weeks returns for a seventh year with a duration expansion. In 2021, the promotion, which ordinarily lasts ten days, will be temporarily rebranded to Roswell Restaurant Weeks, encompassing several weeks, and will run from January 11 – February 11 to support the local restaurants through a traditionally slower period of patronage. Roswell Restaurant Weeks is presented this year through a joint partnership between Roswell Inc and Visit Roswell, the economic development and tourism partner organizations for the City of Roswell.

In previous years, Roswell Restaurant Week has been celebrated as the largest restaurant-focused promotional event in Metro Atlanta. “Restaurants and food & beverage providers make up a segment of the hospitality industry hit the hardest during the pandemic. Facing continuous COVID-related hurdles and colder months, our restaurant partners remain reliant on support that is critical at the local level. Most have made investments that include expanded patio space, tenting, fire pits and electric or gas heaters to offer a pleasant dining experience,” says Andy Williams, Executive Director at Visit Roswell. “Roswell Restaurant Weeks allows us to highlight our partners through offerings typically not seen on standard menus, and the expanded length gives patrons more opportunity to enjoy favorites and consider new choices, as well.”

MURPHY’S PROACTIVELY INSTALLING NEW SYNEXIS MICROBIAL REDUCTION SYSTEM

Posted by Liz and John Attaway, 5/11/20

Iconic Virginia-Highland Eatery is the First Independent Casual Dining Restaurant in Atlanta with this State-of-the-Art Air & Surface Technology

During this pandemic, restaurants and other non-essential businesses were forced to close their doors to help reduce the spread of COVID-19. While Georgia governor Brian Kemp gave restaurants the go-ahead to reopen on April 27, 2020, many are postponing reopening as they work to develop and implement safety measures to protect employees, guests and the community.

As the world debates a reopening timeline, Murphy’s owner Tom Murphy is taking proactive measures to implement new safety protocols and improve the air quality at his iconic Virginia-Highland restaurant with the installation of Synexis, a biodefense technology to reduce the opportunity for infectious microorganisms.

Murphy’s is the first independent casual dining restaurant in Atlanta with this state-of-the-art microbial reduction system. Synexis is the same advanced technology used to continuously reduce bioburden in sectors such as schools and hospitals and is effective against airborne and surface viruses, bacteria and fungi.

“The well-being of our employees and guests has always been our top priority,” says Murphy. “This new Synexis system allows us to go above and beyond our traditional cleaning and safety measures to ensure that our restaurant is as safe as it can be when we reopen our dining room.”

About Synexis

Synexis is the sole provider of Dry Hydrogen Peroxide technology (DHP). The patented process essentially creates an immune system for a controlled environment to reduce airborne and surface microbes. The process generates low concentrations of Dry Hydrogen Peroxide in a pure gas form that is safe for occupied spaces. The system utilizes the ambient air and humidity already in the environment, rips it apart and puts it back together at 5-25 parts per billion. Wherever air goes, the Synexis technology goes to decontaminate 24/7/365 days out of the year.

According to Synexis vice president Russ Stephens, “DHP is unique because it has powerful antimicrobial activity against a broad spectrum of microorganisms. DHP becomes part of the environment and starts to combat the pathogens as soon as they enter the building. We even impact contaminants found in out-of-reach areas. It is a simple process, with big output. We are a safe, green technology that provides a continuous solution to an environmental strategy.”

About Murphy’s

Murphy’s is located at 997 Virginia Ave., NE in the Virginia-Highland neighborhood of Atlanta. Executive chef Andy Tran and his team at Murphy’s have created several menus to satisfy the need for delicious meals to enjoy from the comfort of home. Guests can place orders for takeout and curbside pickup online or by calling 404-872-0904. Offerings are also available for delivery via Zifty.com and DoorDash. Additionally, Murphy’s Wine Shop is available daily from 9 am to 9 pm. For more information, visit www.murphysatlanta.com.

ATLANTA GUYS DINNER GROUP KICKS OFF PANTRY DRIVE

Posted by Liz and John Attaway, 4/26/20

NOW COLLECTING NON-PERISHABLE ITEMS FOR RESTAURANT INDUSTRY WORKERS OUT OF JOBS
The Atlanta Guys Dinner Group (#AGDG) is a group of guys who get together once a month to break bread, socialize, and give back to the Atlanta community. Each month the group would support one nonprofit by donating their time, money, or their services. Monthly gatherings used to take place at a different local restaurant in an effort to support local eateries until the onset of the current pandemic.
Due to Covid-19, AGDG has now pivoted their efforts to help support our city’s out-of-work restaurant workers; the workers who have hosted, served, and cooked for the group over the past two years.
“Now it’s our turn to take care of them,” shares #AGDG Founder Sean Palani.
AGDG is currently delivering bags of food to those restaurant workers who cannot make it to scheduled food donation sites due to lack of transportation. Per donations, the AGDG offers contactless porch and curbside pickup and offers the same for delivery to workers.
AGDG is collecting non-perishable items such as the following to help feed Atlanta’s food family.
To schedule a donation, drop off or pick up, please email seanpalani@yahoo.com or valerie@viafailla.com
Items in need include:
Canned proteins (chicken, tuna, SPAM)
Rice, Pasta, Beans
Peanut Butter and Jelly
Soups and Sauces
Crackers, Cereals, Snacks
Powdered Milk, Teas and Coffee
Toiletries
Baby Food and Diapers
For those who cannot get out to shop for grocery items, cash donations can be made to #ATLFamilyMeal – the 501c3 founded by Michael Lennox of Electric Hospitality that delivers two, free meals per week to unemployed hospitality workers in need.
We thank you for your community support!

CHIRINGA’S TAKE OUT INITIATIVES AND PLANS TO GIVE BACK THIS MAY

Posted by Liz and John Attaway, 4/26/20

Social Responsibility Initiatives to Help Protect and Give Back

Deeply rooted within the community of downtown Alpharetta, CHIRINGA has decided to continue the suspension of their dine-in services until further notice to maintain a safer environment for their patrons and staff and to help enforce the importance of social responsibility. Diners can still dive into the restaurant’s elevated beach food by ordering online for curbside pick up or walk up to the outdoor Fly Up Window, located on the Town Green, for take out orders.

“While we would love to open our doors and help remind everyone of the free-flowing days at the beach, we will always put the safety of our patrons and staff first. We feel that it is too soon to re-open our dine-in services based on the current guidelines set by the CDC. We are so thankful for the continued support from our community, and we encourage our guests to continue practicing social responsibly,” stated Andrew McKoski, Founder and Partner of CHIRINGA.
In efforts to give back in this uncertain time, CHIRINGA will be donating 25% of all online orders during the month of May to non-profit organizations that are helping to supply food to local heroes that need it most, including Atlanta Community Food Bank, Open Hand, Giving Kitchen and Goodr.
“We are all in this together and as a team we strive to support those who are in need at this time. Each week in the month of May, we will be asking our loyal patrons to take all orders online in efforts to give back to those in need around them. Supporting local is not just supporting businesses, but supporting the friendly faces on the frontlines, healthcare workers, first responders, neighbors, family members and friends,” stated Travis Brown, Founder and Partner of CHIRINGA.
CHIRINGA’s full menu will be accessible online and includes whole grain bowls, dips, salads, sandwiches, tacos and plantains, available with fresh fish and clean proteins, along with freshly squeezed juices, specialty cocktails, craft beers and full-bodied wines. For more information and to order online, visit www.chiringa.com or call 770.802.8940.
