PUTTSHACK ATLANTA AND DUNWOODY CELEBRATE PRIDE WITH PURPOSE

Posted by Liz and John Attaway, 6/4/25

Game On for LGBTQ+ Youth This June as Part of National Fundraiser for the It Gets Better Project

Puttshack’s Atlanta and Dunwoody locations are going all in on pride, purpose, and play this June as part of a nationwide fundraiser benefiting LGBTQ+ youth. The tech-infused mini golf experience is inviting guests to party with a purpose all month long—complete with neon lights, good vibes, and a fundraiser supporting the It Gets Better Project, a nonprofit uplifting LGBTQ+ youth around the world.

From June 1 through 30, 20% of every 9-hole mini golf game booked through www.puttshack.com/pride will go directly to It Gets Better. Whether it’s a date night or a family-friendly outing, every swing supports a future where all young people feel seen, celebrated, and supported.

“We are excited to extend our partnership with It Gets Better, who shares our spirit of inclusion, support, and bringing people together,” says Susan Walmesley, Puttshack COO/CMO. “Our company purpose is to bring everyone in to play, and It Gets Better echoes this by creating welcoming spaces to connect, engage, and celebrate together, just like us.”

Last year, Puttshack launched its Piece of the Putt fundraising program, where a portion of gameplay can benefit an organization, in alignment with Pride Month. This program is part of the company’s Puttshack Gives Back initiative, which offers guests and team members various opportunities to support causes they care about.

“We’re grateful for partners like Puttshack who don’t just talk about inclusion, they live it. By creating fun, welcoming spaces where all individuals including LGBTQ+ youth can connect, engage, and celebrate, they help make belonging something everyone can experience,” says Ross von Metzke, It Gets Better Senior Director of Marketing and Communications.

Support for the LGBTQ+ community extends beyond Pride Month through ongoing partnerships, inclusive practices, and local engagement. The collaboration with the It Gets Better Project reflects a commitment to creating spaces where all individuals feel welcome, valued, and celebrated.

This initiative is part of Puttshack’s broader mission to Care Deeply—a core value that drives efforts to support guests, team members, and surrounding communities year-round.More information about charitable initiatives can be found at puttshack.com/charity. More information about charitable initiatives can be found at puttshack.com/charity. Puttshack Atlanta is located at 1115 Howell Mill Rd., and Puttshack Dunwoody is at 111 High Street, Suite 210. Stay connected on Instagram and TikTok at @puttshack.

HORIZON THEATRE TO HOST 27TH ANNUAL NEW SOUTH YOUNG PLAYWRIGHTS FESTIVAL THROUGH JUNE 7

Posted by Liz and John Attaway, 6/2/25

Next generation of writers to sharpen their skills with week of performances,
playwrighting workshops and seminars

Inman Park’s Horizon Theatre is hosting over two dozen talented young playwrights from across the country in its 27th Annual New South Young Playwrights Festival (NSYPF)June 1 – 7. From a wide pool of script submissions from college students nationwide, the theatre company selected 25 aspiring writers to attend the free week-long intensive. The chosen students will be able to flex their creative muscles in a packed week of playwrighting workshops and seminars with professional theatre actors, directors and playwrights. NSYPF will culminate in a free showcase of the new works. The New South Young Playwrights 5-Minute Play Festival will be hosted onstage at Horizon Theatre at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 7.

On May 2, the National Endowment for the Arts rescinded Horizon Theatre’s $30,000 grant that funds the New South Young Playwrights Festival annually. As the grant was initially awarded in November 2024, Horizon was in the final stages of planning for the festival— students had been accepted, personnel hired, airline tickets and housing reserved.  Despite the sudden loss of funding, Horizon was able to move forward with the festival as planned due to the generous support of individual and foundation donors.

The New South Young Playwrights Festival is our most nationally impactful program, identifying and nurturing writers that have gone on to major careers in theatre, television and film,” said Horizon Theatre Co-Artistic/Producing Director Lisa Adler. “These young writers are at Horizon from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. every day of the festival, learning and growing in a supportive, nurturing environment. We focus on introducing them to the world of professional theatre and media writing, building their skills, bringing in professional artists to perform their plays, and creating a community of fellow writers and mentors that can sustain them long after the Festival. It’s an intensive experience that hundreds of NSYPF alumni have called truly life-changing.  We are eternally grateful for the donors who stepped up to help us ensure the show can go on! It’s an honor to give these gifted young people a chance to shine, and we hope to continue this tradition for years to come. The future is bright with this next generation of talented playwrights.”

The lead mentors for this year’s New South Young Playwrights Festival are professional playwrights and educators France-Luce Benson, Kira Rockwell and Crystal Skillman.  France-Luce Benson is a Haitian-American playwright and Assistant Professor at CSU San Marcos. HORIZON THEATRE COMPANY PRESENTS ATLANTA PREMIERE OF LAUGHS IN SPANISH – MAY 23 TO JUNE 22

Posted by Liz and John Attaway, 5/22/25

Latin-infused comedy to play at Inman Park theatre

“A great show… I can see the play itself becoming a new American Classic.” – Broadway World

Part telenovela, part whodunnit, Laughs in Spanish comes to Horizon Theatre May 23 – June 22. High stakes Art Basel is about to begin in Miami, and the art has vanished from Mariana’s trendy modern art gallery! Chaos erupts—and so does laughter— in this fast-paced comedy. Artist and intern Caro and her policeman boyfriend are scrambling to find the thief or replace the art when Mari’s larger-than-life movie-star mother shows up, stealing the spotlight yet again. Then a past girl-crush arrives, and things get even more complicado. Laughs in Spanish is a joyous celebration of Latinx creativity, messy love, mothers and daughters, and the beautiful challenge of finding your place—and your people. This production is performed in English.

Laughs in Spanish is a vibrant, heartfelt comedy that shines a light on the joy and chaos of a Latinx family and identity,” said Horizon Theatre Co-Artistic/Producing Director Lisa Adler. “It’s fresh, funny and full of heart—perfect for anyone who loves a good laugh with a lot of soul.

At the helm of this cafecito-infused comedy is Erika Miranda, a Mexican-Norwegian actor, producer, director and founder of the Atlanta-based, incubative production company Cafecito Productions.  Erika is also an alumna of the Horizon Apprentice Company and was last seen on the Horizon stage in The Wolves

Laughs in Spanish is a joyful comedy about art, identity and the beautiful chaos of being a daughter… or a mother… or a lover,” Director Erika Miranda explains. “Set in a Miami art gallery during the frenzy of Art Basel, the play kicks off with the entire exhibit being robbed and everyone pointing fingers. But the real drama is not just the missing art—it’s the emotional masterpieces we’re all trying to restore at home. The characters remind us that love isn’t always neat, vulnerability is never easy, and sometimes — rather than say ‘I love you,’ ‘I need you’ or ‘I believe in you’— we build cinematic empires and embark on life-altering adventures.  It’s heartfelt, hilarious and alive with the messy magic that unfolds when we begin to see our mothers not just as parents, but as people. Come for the laughs. Stay for the catharsis. Call your mother after.”

Miranda’s company’s first production, Mi Casa, which was first performed at Horizon during the Apprentice Company, can be found on all HBO platforms. Films produced by Cafecito Productions have been screened at festivals across the country, including Cleveland International and Palm Springs Short Fest. Trailer [Trash] Magic, Erika’s directorial debut, won the GA Film Impact Grant and premiered at LALIFF in 2024. Erika was also named One of the Amazing Women in Film by Oz Magazine (2023) and one of Georgia’s Top Industry Influencers by Georgia Entertainment (2024).  Erika is also first Executive Producer of SheATL Arts (of SheNY), a festival that mentors up-and-coming women playwrights.

In Laughs in Spanish, the stakes are high for young Miami gallery owner, Mariana (Ana Miramontes, seen regionally in productions at Houston’s Alley Theatre, Theatre Squared and Florida Studio Theatre), when art goes missing on the eve of Art Basel. Her artist intern, MFA student Caro (Lorena Guillen Castillo, SheATLBFA NYU Tisch) and Caro’s policeman boyfriend Juan (Marcello Audino, City Springs’ Legally Blonde, Theatrical Outfit’s Clyde’s, Aurora’s The Play That Goes Wrong) are onsite to help through the panic while also uncovering some surprises of their own.  When Mariana’s movie-star mother (Denise Arribas, Horizon’s Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike and The Book Club Play) and a past girl-crush (Mabel Thomas, BA Royal Conservatoire of Scotland) show up, the complications rise in this fast-paced comedy about art and success, love and romance, and mothers and daughters.

Performances begin Friday, May 23 at 8 p.m., with a Press Opening on May 30 at 8 p.m. Performances are Thursdays and Fridays at 8 p.m., Saturdays at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m., and Sundays at 5 p.m., running through June 22.  Wednesday performances are May 28 and June 4 at 8 p.m. and June 11 and 18 at 2 p.m. There will be no Saturday matinee on June 7.  Seating is general admission with a reserved seating section for subscribers. General admission tickets start at $35 on Wednesdays and Thursdays and $40 for all weekend performances. Prices rise as performances fill up, so patrons are encouraged to order early for the best prices and availability.  Full-time students under 25 can get $20 tickets with valid student ID by calling the box office or at the door if tickets are available.  There is limited accessible seating for those needing mobility accommodation, and it must be reserved by phone. For tickets and more information, visit horizontheatre.com or call the Box Office at 404.584.7450. Horizon Theatre is in Iman Park/Little Five Points at 1083 Austin Avenue NE, Atlanta, GA 30307
